London Townhouses - layout?
I'm just wondering about the setup of the old london townhouses. Given they are multi-level, are they split up into separate residences? If so, are they completely separate, for complete privacy? Or is it just the open staircase that would separate different boarders?
Thanks.

The tall white ones like those on the link are mostly separated into 3 or 4 flats. I used to live in the basement of one. It had its own separate entrance. The other three flats in the building shared a main entrance (the one with pillars) and a stairwell, but had their own front doors off it. Each flat was self contained inside. The basement usually gets the garden. Many years ago when houses had servants, the basement would have been where the kitchens were and the family would live in the main part of the house, although some were built as flats.

Most of the vast ones are around four floors and have usually been split into flats. You can get a 100 year lease from the Duke of Westminster for one of his, but these sell for millions.
