Rats or squirrels chewing on car cables!!! What to do?

We live in the country. We have many different animals (including chickens), so we have tons of feed which attract rodents. Rats are squirrels are chewing on our car cables. Is there a product to help us get rid of this problem? Poison is not an option. We have dogs. Cats are not an option either, because we have free range chickens. Sticky traps....nope! Our area is very sandy and it covers the sticky trap reducing it's 'stickiness'! Help! Any proven non-lethal rodent repellant?

Update:

When I said non-lethal, that is because of my dogs and chickens. I dont want poison in case the wrong animal gets it. I have NO problems with killing rodents!! We've 'gotten rid' of many squirrels already. I'll look up your suggestion. I was just hoping to get a response from someone that has used one of those products!

Squirrels don't chew on car cables rats do. The only sure way to stop them is to kill them. I know you said non-lethal but the rats don't mind killing you if they were to chew your brake lines. Do a Google search for a device called The Rat Zapper. The maker says it's humane and they never feel a thing. I have one and they do work. It comes with hamster food as bait but you should get a small but juicy and smelly piece of meat to put in as the bait and place the Zapper near your cars that you don't want them to chew on anymore. You may want to get more than one device. Also i don't know if you can eliminate their food source since you have chickens and other animals but the more food sources you eliminate the more likely to get rid of your pest. I read that rats can't stand the smell of peppermint but i don't know how accurate that is. If you just refuse to kill the rats you could get some liquid peppermint from the grocery store and put it all over the areas they like to chew on and maybe it actually works. But really you should try to kill them and dispose of their bodies quickly because they carry so many diseases and they could spread that disease to you and your animals.

You can try using repellent sprays but they do lose their effectiveness rather rapidly. Live traps are also helpful. If you catch a squirrel be sure to take that animal at least 7 miles away or they will find their way back. If you catch rats (which would be my guess) I suggest killing it immediately even though you may not want to harm any animals. Rats are vermin and disease carriers.

can you park someplace else ? tie the dogs to the bumper, maybe they can scare the rats and squirrels away !
