No, it's not bad for you, it has carbohydrates and fiber, and wholegrain (brown) bread is definitely better for you than white bread, because it has more fiber and isn't bleached. The problem is when people eat too much bread, because they don't burn off all the carbohydrates, and it converts to fat.

No single food is bad for you, it's just that people tend to eat unbalanced diets.

Bread contains carbohydrates which we use for energy, and it also contains some vitamins, minerals, and fiber which we also need. One of the reasons people are saying bread is bad for us is because we're generally getting too many carbohydrates (starch, sugar, etc.) in our diet and whatever our bodies don't use, gets turned into fat.

Another of the problems is that some bread also contains high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) instead of plain old sugar which, besides just adding empty calories, is suspected to cause other health issues when eaten in large quantities. It's best to avoid products that use HFCS if possible - mainly because it's in almost all our food even though it doesn't need to be.

Most people don't get enough fiber in their diet, so it's suggested you choose a whole wheat or other whole grain based bread, as opposed to something like White Bread which is just made with processed flour and other preservatives.

    Short answer: No.

Longer answer: No one food is so good for you that it should dominate your diet or so bad for you that you should never eat it at all. Brown bread has more going for it nutritionally than white bread, but that doesn't mean that white bread is *bad*.

Bottom line: Eat a wide variety of foods, including plenty of fruit and vegetables.

At its simplest it is merely a paste of flour or meal and water cooked over or surrounded by heat. More complex breads are leavened in various ways and contain salt and other ingredients, particularly fat and sugar. Although bread is usually thought of as being made from wheat, it can be made from virtually any grain—rye, corn (tortillas), barley and oats (bannocks), teff (injera), amaranth, millet, and rice. Only wheat, however, has the gluten that is essential to a risen loaf, so unless these other grains are mixed with wheat, the loaves will be flat. Many, such as oat, barley, and pure rye bread, will be heavy and dense as well.

Bread is high in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the basis of energy we get from food. If you don't use that energy it is turned into fat and stored for later. Grains that are not whole grains are less hearty carbs and provide minimal nutritional value along with the high carbohydrate (kind of like eating sugar but not as bad). Basically you want to try to eat whole grains as much as possible and if you eat too much bread it will be turned to fat.

It's not bad, you just don't want to eat a ton of bread. In moderation, bread is good. Whole wheat is healthier than white, but white is not necessarily bad.

considering that bread in some form has been eaten for centuries, bad for you simply doesn't cut it.

In excess, ANYTHING can be bad for you.

Eat your bread as a part of a healthy diet that includes plenty of variety in fruits and veggies and whole grains.
