Disk Cleanup deleted all my files! How do I get them back?

It removed what appeared to be every file shortcut and every file not edited in the last few days. It appeared that I was able to recover some files using system restore, but most of my stuff is gone. I was stupid and didn't remember to backup files, so is there any way to recover the files?

If it's gone forever, can someone at least provide some reason why Disk Cleanup did this so I can prevent it in the future?

Update:

It seems so far that anything not stored on the desktop or in a folder on the desktop is fine.
