If you put a document on Google Drive, does this give Google any rights to that document?

I heard that Google owns the copyright to any document on the Drive (formerly Google Docs)

To quote an expert who has interviewed Google about this issue, "That is very much false."

The terms of service state: "Some of our Services allow you to submit content. You retain ownership of any intellectual property rights that you hold in that content. In short, what belongs to you stays yours."

On the other hand, they also have a very broad license that (like Y!A and most others), purports to continue even if you stop using the services of Google Drive. At least Y!A terminates the license if you delete your contributions.

What do you mean, you "heard" that? Did you hear that from Google or from some idiot that makes stuff up? I heard that Hillary Clinton has a penis once. That doesn't mean it's worth discussing.

No, Google doesn't own the copyright of things you upload to Google Drive.

If that is stated in the EULA/Terms of Use that you accepted for the use of that service then yes.

Whether you think it's right or not, the EULA/Terms of Use you accept to use a service is LAW.

Heh, writers of contracts like EULA arent legislators, they dont make laws.

The contracts they do write are subject to challenge in the courts on many grounds, and many are successfully challenged.
