Writers : a question about naming your characters!!!?

I'm an amateur writer, and I was wondering if any professionals have suggestions on how to choose a character name. Is it smart to go with a simple common name such as Emily or Bruce, or is OK to go with something a little more flashy like Blythe or Zephyr, or perhaps a happy medium like Arabella or Dorian.

Really curious!

Thank you

It depends, really. Neil Gaiman has some really interesting names for his characters, names like "Nobody Owens." If your story is fantasy, be as creative as you want with names as long as they aren't too far out there and you're consistent. If it's realistic fiction or something, choose generally normal names, but you can still be creative, or even make up names so long as they aren't absolutely out there...unless the parents of your character are hippies.

I will write down names like crazy, not caring how many i write down or how silly they are as they come into my head, until i find ones that begin to fit with the character in my head. It's a fun, often times frustrating or tedious process, but not all the time!

    Cheers!

I'm not sure if I count as "professional" - I'm earning money from my writing, but not nearly enough to live on.

When in doubt, go with common names. Rare names stick out, and not usually for good reasons. I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face around anyone called Blythe or Zephyr. (I'd expect them to have sued their parents for emotional distress caused by all the teasing they got in school, unless perhaps they lived in Beverly Hills or Kensington.)

Ask yourself, "What would their parents have called them?" Consider their economic and social status and (if appropriate) their religion. For some countries, you can find lists of the most popular names in any given year, so look up the list for the year your character was born and pick something that takes your fancy.

I'm not a professional, but I think it all depens on the personality. But, it also depens on YOU, what kinda book do you want to write? Old fashion? Future? 2012? what?

Old fashioned- I have no idea, sorry.

    Future- Flashy

2012- Somewhat flashy, not for all you character though.

    Hope i helped!
