Are you satisfied with incompleteness?

Science cannot explain the "why's" in life. If faith in God isn't something you can follow, I understand, and my intention is not to persuade you to do so with this question. What I can't comprehend is the fact that every one of us cares about said "why's," yet so many are satisfied with just "how's." If you are not concerned with why's, then you are not using your brain to full capacity (and responding to this question wouldn't be something of interest to you...) For those of you who think you believe in just science, how would you try to fill this "meaning" void in your life? You have to turn to something other than science at a higher level of thought, I'm just curious to see what options everyone chooses.

P.S. Solipsism is a great word to mention when you want to sound "smart" and you have nothing constructive to say nor a proper defense. A majority of those who use this term believe themselves that there are no absolute truths, yet this statement is self-refuting...

Update:

Mike- Do you know how to write a sentence without errors?

Update 2:

Pete- I appreciate your search for answers. You appear to be one of very few thinking people.

Update 3:

Kelly- Why does any of this bother you enough to care? Asking why doesn't necessarily involve a deity. You are the one assuming it does.

Update 4:

Yousuck- Why doesn't the body just continually excrete waste?

Update 5:

Dave- 1. I explained that the "why" I was referring to pertained to "meaning" (as you proved in your second response yourself). 2. If seeking "why" were purely spiritual then you have either agreed that a spiritual realm exists in some form, or that asking why is also physical because we are capable of doing so without a spiritual side to us (assuming you don't believe in spirituality in some form or another).

Update 6:

Josh and Lisa- Thank you for your input, it was precisely what I was asking for. However, when I mentioned full capacity of the brain... I did not intend to call anyone stupid. I simply imply that that since we are capable of pondering "why," not doing so in one way or another (if you don't seek a deity, then by all means I am not classifying you as some inferior human) would be a failure to utilize all of what our brain offers. Whether you consider this extended capacity as positive or negative is purely opinion based.

Update 7:

Dana- Thank you for your honesty. If some atheists choose the same route as you have, then far be it from me to say I'm better. I am glad that you have chosen to at least ponder meaning in life (I don't care what gives life meaning to you, just that you search for some truth even if it may not someday manifest itself for you). At least you have also admitted that science can't explain everything! I love scientific inquiry (even majoring in pharmacy currently), it just bothers me when people say that science is all there is without a second thought.

Atheists don't expect science to explain (all) the "why's." That doesn't mean we don't think the why's matter, we just believe each person has to find them for themselves, and we don't believe that it is or has to be though a deity of any kind. And ultimately, we realize there may be no actual answer to the question of "why?" - some thing just are, there is no greater "reason," and yes, we're OK with that.

We want to know the whys. We just don't find religion to be a remote possibility to explain the why.

Our purpose in life is to live. To do with our life as we wish, to not be naive and blindly follow things that cannot be proven.

To use the word "believe" when referring to science is not correct. I do not believe in anything. I use the theories and facts science provide where they prove what is correct. Science doesn't have all the answers, but science never says it does.

"If you are not concerned with why's, then you are not using your brain to full capacity" is just a long way of saying that because we do not believe in your supernatural deity we are stupid. By thinking that your God did it and that is the end of it, that makes you not using your brain to its capacity.

As an atheist I question everything, I continue to try to learn everything I can. Religion does not provide this it hinders it. Knowledge destroys religion. I say this because the more we know about how things work, the less unknown things religion has for them to say "God did it".

1.) Science answers many "why's": that is what Science is based on. I am not certain "why" you posted such a blanket statement as "Science cannot explain the "why's" in life." That makes no sense.

2.) Meaning does not come from the material world, it comes from the spiritual world. You tell people that they are not using their brains to full capacity because they follow science, and yet you fail to see your own misunderstanding: our physical forms are part of this material world, and because of that there is NO MEANING in them as well.

I don't think there is an answer to "why?" I think that life and everything I do in my life is pointless. There is no reason for us to even be here, let alone a reason for anything else. I am in utter awe of the fact that the universe unfolded in such a way as to contain life that can think. I am amazed that the very first life on this earth has lasted in an unbroken chain of living that leads to me, to all of us. Life is simply too awesome to demand any further meaning from.

    > "the fact that every one of us cares about said "why's" <

Since when was that "a fact"? There are many that don't care about the "why's", and there are many that don't believe there needs to be a "why".

    > "If you are not concerned with why's, then you are not using your brain to full capacity" <

Horseshit. So, if I don't believe in magical deities, I'm not using my brain to full capacity? Pffft...Paleeze.

I'll continue to search for the "Why's". I'm not just going to give up and go with the cop-out called "Goddidit".
