Motorcycle running rich after cleaning?
'01 Honda shadow 750
It was running lean & had sat for a year so I cleaned the carbs & stock jets.
Now it runs rich (pulled plugs to verify).
The pilot screws are set to manufacturer settings of 2.5 turns out...
what could I have done to make it run so rich??

There is a list as long as your arm of things you could have done wrong, including the choke cable too tight as another poster suggested. 2.5 turns on the pilot screws is not the problem.
A couple things come to mind as likely suspects. Did you put the needle jet in facing the right way? With the convex end against the needle jet holder, the part the main jet screws into?
Did you seat the jet needle into diaphragm properly and put the plastic spring holder in the right way?
When putting the pilot screws back in, did you put the o-ring in first, followed by the washer, then the spring and then the pilot screws?
When you put the float needles in, did you make sure you put the little wire clip on the tang so the needle hung off it and then eased it into the needle seat?
There are 50 other things swirling around in my mind, but these are some of the biggies I've seen when repairing carbs that the owner screwed up.

Carburetors do no longer fall out of adjustment. they must be adjusted to seize up on worn engine factors, or to examine overall performance up-grades. Fouling plugs on a 2 stroke engine - grimy air cleanser. undesirable high quality oil used for premix, or to a lot oil interior the premix - 32:a million is the norm. Leaking crankshaft seal - seize section. wiped out perfect end - cylinder, piston & rings. 2 stroke engines require rebuilds fairly frequently - the perfect end would be wiped out without showing any seen scoring or engine harm. The piston, ring end hollow and cylinder ought to be measured. seek for advice out of your provider instruction manual to be taught the technique and tolerances. in case you won't be able to persist with unique, step be step training listed in a provider instruction manual, carry your motorbike to somebody that knows what they are doing.
