What is the difference between the Mercedes 280, 350 and 450?

And now I'm talking about the 70's and 80's models.

    Engine size. The 280 had the 2.8L I6 engine while the 350 and 450 had V8 engines with a displacement of 3.5 and 4.5L respectively.

    Essentially, these nomenclature indicates the liter size of the engine, i,e, 280 is roughly 2.8 liters, etc.
