What was the last Gunfighter?

Of course we're talking Aircraft.

Update:

Too quick. How did you know that? I was fire control in the day and we didn't know that. Phantoms got the glory they were fast and ugly.

The F-8 Crusader was the last fighter designed with guns. The last gun kill by a US fighter pilot was in a Crusader in Vietnam. While the A-10 isn't a fighter, it was the last aircraft to be credited with an aerial gun kill. This occurred during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and it nailed a helicopter. I believe the last gun kill by a fighter aircraft occurred in 1982 when Israeli F-4 Phantoms destroyed 6 MIG 21's in flight. Five were missile kills and one was a gun kill.

Phantom, Ugly? The A-8 looks like the A-7 SLUF on steroids.

If I had read your question four hours ago I would have answered the Vought F-8 Crusader. Alas, I was sound asleep when you posted the question.

    The motto of Crusader pilots:

"When you are out of F-8's, you are out of fighters."

F-8's still trained for dogfighting after all the F-4 squadrons trained for intercept missions.
