1964 Mercury Marauder with 390?
A friend of mine who owns two restored '68 Firebirds, a 350 HO and a 400, both four speeds, was told by a 20's something "knows everything" that his grandfather purchased new a 1964 Mercury Marauder 390, transmission type unknown, that was delivered to the dealer with a two barrel intake and carb on the engine with 3x2 carburetion in the trunk to be installed by the dealer. I've been around 60+ years and been involved in the automotive world for 50+ of those years. I know Chrysler very well and am not completely ignorant of the other manufacturers but my knowledge of their performance offerings is somewhat limited, I know in the '60's a lot of performance equipment arrived in the trunk and was dealer installed.
Was this 390 engine scenario a possibility with the '64 Marauder, I've been unable to find any info to this question on the net?
Thanks for your time and input.

Never heard of it, but that car was used in Nascar. So "possibly", it was not legal for the "Ford plant" to sell the car complete (emissions or safety), but once it got to the dealer the rules changed. Would have to be "special order" of course.

The Marauder is not a very special car unto itself - it merely signified the semi-fastback roofline that Ford introduced in mid-1963. A bit more special was the S-55, which was akin to Ford's Galaxie XL.
The 390 was pretty common in those years but a really obscure option was the 3x2 carbs, as the 406 and 427 ended up taking the performance helm starting in 1962-63. So, yes, it was possible to order the tri-carb 390 in 1964, and it's entirely possible that it was delivered in the trunk, just like your early Pontiac ram air systems. I know that's what I've heard in the past.
Usually, the "know everything" guy is full of it, but in this case he may be on to something.

Very possible as Ford did offer racing equipment....i.e. Shelby racing parts
