What are the possibilities for getting a home security system without a land line telephone?

We are interested in getting some type of home security system installed (such as ADT). We had one independent consultant visit a few years ago (this consultant would have had us purchase the entire security system for thousands of dollars) and mentioned that if we wanted to have the security system use cell phones (we do not have a home telephone line) then it was quite a large additional monthly charge. I am not familiar with the mechanics behind how a home security system works so I am wondering if others have made the choice to just install a land line or if they have paid additional monthly charges to use their cell phone and if so, how much were/are they charged.

If you have an internet connection at home you may want to check out http://www.lifeshield.com/home-security-products/l... , they normally use your internet connection for communication, and use an additional no charge gsm transmitter (AT&T/T-mobile cell type signal) as backup.

Stay away from ADT. They are going to want $50 a month and have you sign a 3 year contract. Also at the end of the 3 years, they still own the equipment. You are kind of stuck with them.

Lifeshield is a do it yourself alarm system, so unless you are wanting to put in your system and service it yourself, you may want to have another company install it for you.

Most of the security companies out there today can install a system that will work on either an internet or cellular connection. The larger national companies will sometimes give you the equipment for free, but are going to want $40 to $70 a month for 3 to 5 years. You may or may not own the equipment, check the contract.

Depending on where you live, there should be several smaller local companies that will put in a system and monitor it for much less than the big companies. You can sometimes get a system for a fraction of the cost of the national companies. You may be able to get a short term contract too. I live in Fort Worth and I pay $22.95 per month for internet monitoring with month to month contract. I can also arm or disarm the system from my cell phone.

Cellular or internet monitoring should only cost a few dollars more per month, although there may be an additional charge for equipment initially.

alarm systems have the cell phone and some are even using your internet connection nowadays..

a cell phone on the alarm is still a substantial charge over a phone line, but think of it like this. Youre going to pay 20 dollars for a phone which you wont ever use or just 10 dollars more for a cell connection with your alarm.

it has nothing at all to do with your cell phone!

its an independent cell phone which they install near your main alarm box. and it connects to your alarm and uses cell phone towers INSTEAD of phone wires to call the monitoring center.

ill repeat it has nothing to do with your personal cell phone.

charges range anywhere from 8-15 dollars more a month on top of your alarm monitoring and usually a one time install charge of 100-300 dollars for the part

so plan on around 36-50 dollars total including monitoring a month depending on what other features you decide for your alarm.
