is the sacrificing of a creature essential to his casting? If I had no creature to sacrifice would the spell fizzle?

No, sacrificing a creature is just something that happens when he enters the battlefield. It's not a requirement to cast him.
Note, however, that it doesn't say "sacrifice ANOTHER creature". If you have no other creatures to sacrifice, you'll end up sacrificing Greven himself.

The sacrificing of a creature in Greven il-Vec's case is a triggered effect on coming into play, not an additional cost.
You will have to sacrifice a creature when he comes into play. Even if he's flickered.
If it were an additional cost, it would be like Headless Skaab.
