Health insurance confusion?

My husbands work insurance is insanely high ($500 a month for 2 people and is very basic) so I've been looking at other health insurances that we can get. I'm just very confused by what to shop for. One I found that I liked had a $5k deductible with 0% copay and was $250 a month for the two of us. It was from Anthem.

We live in Indiana if that matters.

My question is, what should I look for when purchasing health insurance? What are reasonable rates for a married couple with no dependants that are relatively healthy.

A 5K deductible means that you pay the first $5000 of any care you need each year before the insurance company pays anything. If you really never get care, and you could afford up to $5000 in bills if you do need care, then this might be worth it, but you're basically paying $250 to be covered in case of serious medical need, but won't impact the more standard stuff.

You should look for cost per visit, yearly deductibles that need to be met before the plan pays out, whether the plan would cover you for the doctors and hospitals you prefer, any annual or lifetime maximums, and how they deal with pre-existing conditions.

The one with the low monthly premium is useless. Two healthy adults will never spend out of pocket 5k in doctor visits for 1 year. The company plan for 500 is cheap in comparison.

Any plan that covers everything from doctor visits to surgery will cost you 3000 a month

What you look for is a plan your current medical provider accepts. Having a plan that your doctor or hospital does not deal with leaves you paying up front 100% and waiting for the insurance company to reimburse you.

What you look for is a honest insurance broker who can assess your best move. $500/week would be insanely high. $500/month is normal.

It is difficult to determine on your own. You need to find a good local agent that represents several companies and discuss your needs. Good Luck
