How do you know if someone is a danger to themselves or others?

That is the standard they use to lock people away involuntarily, but I'd like to know how it is determined that someone meets the standard.

If someone was having a manic episode, what types of actions or statements would be sufficient to make a determination that someone is a danger to themselves or others?

Update:

How do you know if they are suicidle and how do you know if they are sufficiently violent to hurt someone.

Also, I've known people who have been put under 72 hour holds without ether of those requirements being met.

Update 2:

Update 3:

Rebecca,

Thanks !!

If they are suicidal then they are a threat to themselves. If they are violent then they are a threat to others.

Edit - Have they attempted suicide? Are they threatening suicide? Are their significant signs of suicide (suicide notes, giving away personal items, etc).

Violence = assault, destruction of property, etc.

Ultimately it will be up to the police or hospital personnel to decide if the person need to be hospitalized.
