What the legal status of butterfly knives in NYC?

I know that blades longer than 4 inches are illegal in the city.

I know that People v Zuniga (NYS Supreme court, 2003) case classified butterfly knives as NOT gravity knives.

However how all of this looks in practice?

I don't think they're illegal, because I've taken mine out in the street before and only got funny looks. No one approached me about it.

Any conventional butterfly knife is illegal... in the whole USA I'm pretty sure... Now, There ARE some loopholes.

I have seen Butterfly Knives that work via magnets (legal because they are not specifically outlawed). I believe I have seen one that worked via springs too. Basically, there needs to be SOME SORT of mechanism, even if it really doesn't change the function... Look into those magnetic ones, they are legit.

in NY state no, and i don't believe there's any city ordinances on it. this is because they have been determined not to be a gravity knife in New York and i believe New York City. Although any knife over 4 in or more of any style is likely to get you in trouble if your caught with it. The blade of the knife can be caused by one hand using a method called flipping mostly performed in arts for amusement. For more information see below
