How do I make Front Row on my Macbook Pro work?

I open it up and it will only go up and down the menu. When I hit any button it closes. I thought it was used to listen and view media but I have no idea how to make the buttons work. I watched a video but I didn't get a remote with my computer so those directions don't help. There is no help with the program. I have loads of downloads in Itunes but using it keeps making the computer freeze. I thought this might be an alternative. any ideas?

Update:

Yes, Itunes causes system to freeze after about an hour. Did that after last update. Don't know how to fix. Found out Lion update causes Front Row not to work...oh well! Don't have access to I store. Am in italy...yeah they have them but I don't speak Italian and don't just want to hand over my computer to someone who doesn't speak the language it's in. I just won't use Itunes until I get back to USA in Jan sometime. Am on Sailboat and need computer for nav stuff. I can listen to Ipod.

Thanks for trying.

Return key. To go back, esc key.

The Apple Remote is always optional, not a basic right.

Using "it" means what, iTunes? If iTunes freezes the system, you gots mighty big problems. Fix that. Front Row is not an alternative to iTunes. It is a reflection of iTunes and iPhoto. You can't use Front Row in place of iTunes.

    EDIT:

Front Row is left over from your previous OS. You are right, it is totally useless in OS 10.7 or later. Trash the iTunes prefs file (com.apple.itunes.plist). Could it be that other apps you might use for more than one hour could cause a freeze? If so, it isn't really caused by iTunes. Repair with Disk Utility. Submit a new question about iTunes freeze after testing to be sure other apps (Safari, etc.) cannot cause a freeze after one hour.

Be sure the iTunes issue isn't content-related. Find ten (or 20) songs you can play with no freeze, and make a playlist with just those tested songs. Let it play for a couple hours. If no freeze, probably a faulty song file / format (such as FLAC).
