Is there anything positive about Globalization and Consumerism?

I see these things as one of the biggest scourges of society today. Although they have become part of our daily lives and routines, and we are all affected by them in some way, does that make them normal? Ps: I'm not some crackpot hippie or communist, just an average guy observing the wolrd around him.

Globalisation can be positive but not as it's practiced today in economic terms. If there were free movement of labour as well as goods, it would lead to wages going up in the Third World because there would be a genuinely free market. Globalisation also enables me to answer your question although it's not exactly in the realm of economics. Awareness of distant events is also positive. Because we're aware of what's happening in Syria, for example, things might improve there because we can do things like boycott them. That also indicates something positive about consumerism. Choosing between products gives us some control about where money goes, which is a potential tool in improving the lot of poorer people and preferring less oppressive regimes.
