Credit issuer refusing to close fraudulant account.. Who do I report this to?

I don't know what action I can take here. I lost my wallet a couple months ago, I reported it lost and handled the fraudulent use of my cards, etc right away. Shortly after this person who used my cards opened an account at a local, shady department store and and maxed out the new account. I called the store's fraud department and was assured the card was closed. A few weeks later I discovered it was not and now the account balance has increased by about $1,000 AFTER being maxed. I have called the fraud department and emailed but I am being ignored. They know that I want this account closed and choose to allow it to stay open. This is irritating and the only reason I can think of why they are choosing to do this is so they can deny my fraud claim and come after me for as much $$$ as possible. I called and filied a complaint with the FTC a couple weeks ago due to the store opening this account while I have a fraud alert attached to my credit reports. At that time I had assumed the account had been closed. What can I do? Who can I report this to?

Update:

As I stated, this is a local department store that has a shady reputation. They are one of those places that caters to those have poor credit and will give credit to almost anyone. The store's fraud department informed me that the account had been opened online. The address, phone number and job information provided when the account was opened doesn't match what's in my credit files, AND I had a fraud alert in place, yet they were allowed to open an account. I discovered the account because I have been monitoring my credit since losing my wallet.

First, stop calling. Send the dept store a certified, return receipt letter. Indicate that you have called the fraud dept requesting the account be closed. Include a copy of the police report (assuming you already filed a police report) and request written confirmation that the account is closed and will not be reported as your debt to the credit bureaus.

You need a papertrail. Make a file and get everything in writing. Things like this tend to come back on down the road. Having confirmation from the original creditor that the account was fraud will put a quick end to any collection agency trying to collect.

If this account shows on your credit report, file a dispute with the credit bureau indicating ID theft and include a copy of the police report.

You won't get anywhere complaining to the FTC over the fraud alert being ignored. There is on requirement for potential creditors to comply with a fraud alert. In fact, most creditors pretty much ignore the alert and do not bother to call you to confirm you applied for this account. You would be much better off freezing your credit reports with all three credit bureaus. That way no one, including you, can open a new account unless you unfreeze the credit report.

You should have a right to know the address, phone number and job information the fraudster gave. It's time to contact the police.

Since this person probably gave their real information, he will be easy to catch.

An IP address will be easy to track.

And this person probably had items shipped to their home.

Take your credit reports and file a police report at a station.

call the better business bureau (or equivalent for your country) tell them that you have followed all proper procedures to ensure that this establishment closes ALL ACCOUNTS in your name and NEVER reopens them and that you feel that this business has not upheld what they were supposed to do properly. make sure you let your bank in on the situation and tell them that the company may try to come after your real bank account for the expenses. tell the bank that if this happens you will be sueing the company and to lock your account from ALL ACTIVITIES. if you are in the U.S. also call your governer and write him/her a letter about the situation and how it has affected your life. your bank may require you to inform and be questioned by the FBI (USA). don't be nervous and just tell the truth of what has transpired and tell them you are afraid for your safety and well-being. good luck. if all this fails.................hire a hacker to find this person. ^_-
