I'm not quite sure what to do with this goldfish...?
Hello, everyone! So, early tonight I was at a friend's party, and he was giving goldfish in little vases away as favors. I got really excited and took one home, but I am not realizing that it was probably not such a fantastic idea.
Still in my excited I-have-a-fish-woohoo! state, I went to Wal-mart (I had a gift-card) and bought a "starters kit" that included a 1-gallon bowl, some gravel, a little plastic planty-dealio, water treatment pellets, and some food. Convinced that I was now a valid fish-owner, once I got home I moved my little fishy into his (presumably it's a he, I honestly have no freaking clue) new bowl and thought he would live a happy little fishy life.
About two hours ago, I got curious about how long goldfish lived, so I googled it. Not only did I find out that they can live 20 years if well-cared-for, I also read that leaving Nirschl (my fish's name--don't ask) in a gallon bowl is considered animal cruelty by many, and that to properly raise little Nirschl I need a 20-gallon tank, a filter, an aerator, gravel, plants, decorations, lots of water treatment supplies, and the works.
I realize now that instead of just being all enthusiastic about actually having a pet, I should have done some research first and understood that I am dealing with a living being that should not be neglected. I am a poor college student with a tiny dorm that probably couldn't fit a 20-gallon aquarium even if I could afford one (which I can't when all the accessories are factored in). I know the friend that I got Nirschl from was just planning on keeping the fish in bowls, so I don't want to give Nirschl back to him. I do have a friend with a koi fish pond, and I thought of giving Nirschl to her, but I am unsure of whether or not the little guy would survive long with 10 or so fully-grown koi. Assuming I can't give him to my koi-pond friend, what can I do with Nirschl? I really don't want to treat him badly, but the procedure is truly beyond my means. Is there any place I can take him, or anything? Any ideas at all would help; I am at a loss here.
Thanks very much for reading and for your help!

First off do NOT listen to the very bad advice most gave you on here. Goldfish do not grow to the size of their tank. They get stunted which can result in a very short life which will be miserable for it. Eventually it will kill the fish if it lasts long to become stunted. You can do as one person said and buy a 5 or 10 gallon until it can survive with the koi or you can take it to a pet store and donate it. A fish living in a bowl it's entire life is like a person living in a closet their entire life. It sounds like you really want to do what is best for the fish so you can do daily 50% water changes until you can afford a proper tank, which setups can be very cheap on craigslist, that way you know he is safe :)

Actually, 20 gallon tanks only work for fany goldfish (double tail, shortened body), single tails (the ones with long body) need much more and they are considered pond fish.
It's great that you are trying to find a new home for Nirschl. I agree about the koi pond, I wouldn't there to put a young goldfish in there. You can try and find a local fish store that's willing to take him in. Sometimes privately owned stores are willing to take fish in, even if they weren't sold by them. If it doesn't work try advertising locally (even write some details about the adult size and expected age of the fish). Try craigslist (or the local equivalent of it) and see if you can put up printed ads somewhere (here we have a pet food chain store that allow ads).
Meanwhile, focus on keeping Nirschl healthy. I recommend doing daily partial water changes. You can use a piece of airlining tube as a siphon to remove waste from the gravel. Don't forget to dechlorinate his new water. (Don't worry about calling Nirschl him or her, young goldies are close
to impossible to sex.)
As for bowls: you can keep a Venus fly trap in there (research first, they are not very difficult to keep alive but they don't work like your avarage plants). Many people keep Bettas in their dorm room; a single Betta can live it's entire life happily in a 5 gallon tank with a lid, heated, filtered.

provide it a magnificent cycled tank, quite some nutrients and sufficient floor section to respire off the main appropriate and the goldfish could quickly be satisfied. including some Stresscoat product ought to help. Anacharis, Dwarf Anubias and duckweed can stand low temperatures that goldfish love. Dwarf Anubias isn't too tasty if it pleases you to have your goldfish munch on them, nevertheless. Tropical Hornwort is a speedy-starting to be plant that your goldfish will munch on, in spite of the undeniable fact that it fairly is going to maintain up with it fairly is enhance, so it is not long gone interior the blink of a watch

Goldfish can grow pritty large and need over 50 gallons!I would put him in with the koi and see how he does!I am very happy that you don't want your pet to die!,
Mr Random
EDIT: If a goldfish is kept in a small tank its growth will slow down and its orgains will outgrow its body!
They have TOXIC waste so the need a good brand filter!

All I have to say is that you don't have to listen to all that mumbo jumbo about it needing all those things.... a goldfish does great in a bowl or in a 1 gallon tank... :-)
Source(s): I have my goldfish in a bowl for 3 months now and she's as healthy as can be... so a 1 gallon tank is GREAT!!! - 9 years ago
Get him a female fish to mate and once they mate release them to the water that is safe and doesn't contain sharks, killer sharks, whales, crocodiles and other beasts like them, he would live happily with his wife
