Bad smell from tooth socket. Dry socket?
I just got my teeth pulled yesterday and everything I read about a bad smell from the sockets is from something called dry socket. I just have some pain but it's bearable and expected from it just being done yesterday. I'm really worried because I had a milkshake earlier today and I don't want to develop dry socket :(. Is there another cause for it? I've been using the rise they gave me and swishing it around to try and clean out my sockets. I'm scared. Help me please.
How do I know if the clot comes out. Do I feel it come out? Is it noticeable? Everyone I've talked to has said that it hurts really bad and I'm in the military so it's harder for me to just get up and go to the dentist. And atm the clinic is closed so I can't even find someone to talk to :(. Do I just pop pain-killers and deal with it?

Healing sockets do smell rotten and that's completely normal. A dry socket is when the blood clot gets dislodged and causes an infection of the underlying bone producing severe and excruciating pain. Things to do to prevent a dry socket: do not drink through a straw for at least a week after the extractions, do not rinse your mouth for at least a week, do not smoke for 3-4 days, and do not spit for 24 hours after the extractions. Doing any of the above may dislodge the blood clot and lead to a dry socket. If you lose the blood clot don't worry about it unless you develop a dry socket; it is very difficult to see if a clot has been dislodged. Post extraction pain and discomfort is normal, after all ,you had a tooth pulled and that's a surgical procedure. And don't get paranoid if anything gets into the extraction site because nothing will ever become trapped since extraction sites heal from the bottom up. Patients do more harm to themselves when they try to clean out their sockets; just leave well enough alone and healing will take place uneventfully.

A dry socket happens when the clot comes out. Sucking on a straw can cause that. Your breath might be weird because of the anesthesia and blood. Wait a couple days. You'll know by then if you have any issues. Lots of people get dry sockets, so don't be scared. If it happens to you it is easy to take care of.

i developed dry socket two weeks ago , i did not notice my clot come out , the pain is really bad , and there is a bad smell to me it smells like rotten tooth , be very easy when rinsing your mouth , .. spitting , smoking are some of the main causes for dry socket . if you can get a little mirror and look in your mouth , with dry socket you be able to see your jaw bone . and when you sleep do not lay down straight , you need to lay in a chair that leans back , another way to tell if you have it is if you wake up in the middle of the night in horrible pain . when you have dry socket it hurts to lay down . i really hope you do not have it , feel better

The strips they use to pack your sockets with are coated with petroleum and are soaked in eugenol (smells like oil of cloves). It is a numbing agent that works well for dry-socket and will need to be changed every couple of days. The smell is more than likely coming from that...mixed with foods & bacteria in your mouth....and plus, it's harder to keep your teeth well brushed when you have had your wisdom teeth out recently. There is dry blood, medication and bacteria in your mouth...it will smell/taste bad for a while, but will go away as the dry sockets heal. Once you don't have to have them packed any longer, they should give you a plastic syringe with a curved, pointy tip to use to clean out the sockets. Be sure to use this on a regular basis. Because you have had dry sockets, it will take longer for the "holes" to close up and they need to be kept clean. This, along with regular flossing and brushing will have you back to normal within a couple of weeks of having your final packing removed. I know it's bothersome...hang in there. Good luck
