How do you feel about the government opening up the old SUbic Naval Base to U.S.?

As an American tax payer and a US Army vet I am totally against having our troops in Philippines even as advisers.

I also appose military aid to Philippines the majority has been misdirected or misused.

If there were to be a credible mozzlum threat to the US in Philippines I would support drone strikes or special ops to eliminate the vermin.

If Subic were to be open to US Navy vessels to seek shelter from a Typhoon that would make sense.

The Filipino people made their feelings very clear years ago in that they do not want the US service people in their country and I think we should respect that.

Filipinos have made their choice. Good luck, you may want to brush up on your Mandarin.

YAK RIDER has a point. Will the USA have to pay rent to defend the Philippines? Is that it? Is that the agreement or is it just a naval base with no strings attached? I wonder? Would we have to protect the South China Sea for the Philippines and The Spratleys from the Chinese?

Bad idea. The leftist / Marxist / communist / pro-china types have basically over-run subic. Relatives of the same anti-US leftist politicians that outed the US Navy now run Subic as a pro-Chinese, pro-asian -mafia haven, with 5th column pro-china Marxist anti-usa agitators on standby ready mode for organized propaganda protests against the USA. Extortion rackets are rampant in Subic, which is why no major cruise ship lines will visit; Security is compromised. Pro-China Subic Quisling racketeers seem more interested making a quick buck from their cut in rolling drugged sailors in local clip joints than enhancing long term investment with major players like the US Navy, who may pose a threat to their shady rackets. The US built facilities at Subic and Clark have already been sold off or allowed to decay beyond repair, (such as the Subic golf O club, it is now HQ for Asian Mafia; while the large modern base Hospital at Clark was abandoned, gutted by scavengers, and is now beyond repair) . The dubious Sales of former US military base land and buildings was a source of huge profits, and graft, by well connected Filipinos, mostly relatives of high powered politicians that orchestrated the US military base shut downs, so these anti-US proponents have vast wealth, and potential future wealth, all tied to their anti-US military base rhetoric. Unless and until the Government of the Philippines can ensure security and cooperation for US Naval Vessels, it would be better for the US Navy to avoid Subic for any maintenance, recreation, resupply, refueling purposes. The US Navy would do better to find multiple other safe harbors to do business with, such as Batangas, Puerto Galera, etc, etc.

Subic has been over-run by pro-china, 5th column militants & quislings. Better strategy to simply avoid the marxist fortress in Subic that is the core element in anti-US strategy percieved to hinge upon consolidation of US forces in Subic, as it was formerly. It would be better to move US ships and U$ funds to many other harbors in the Philippines that are more cooperative, safe and friendly to the US Navy. Subic may once again be a safe haven for US ships after it is surrounded by US friendly competitors. In essence, an 'Island Hopping' strategy around Subic, to gain access to smaller nearby islands and ports, would be better than a direct frontal assault to regain the now anti-US, pro-marxist, 5th column, quisling, stronghold that is Subic today.

In a positive way of thinking that is a good news. It will help unemployed Filipinos get a job.

I'm just being realistic my friend.

I am not of philipinne blood, yet i am retiring there in a couple of years, and my heart i s with " vandahartz" .and .the peoples involved. Yes there probably be the few ones that are seeking funds for services, and others just trying to get by, and i do understand their needs. Yet again this is an effort that is far reaching in it' s. Implications. I believe reaching out to allies i this time of insecurities of national defences of each country,that we need to make sure that our allies know that we are there too protect them as well as protect our own country as well..This situation with china has the world on edge, and i believe that there would be a portion in this agreement that the u.s.a. would pull out when situation of tenseness lessens....With this said, we should also hold all accountable should laws be broken,especially and more so,when it involves members of the military personnel..I wish too thank oneiloilo for posting this.

This could stabilize the Asia-pacific region without any confrontation to the intruder like China.

We could not afford to war, lack in warfare supply and no proper war training for our youth in school.

US military presence in Subic, save expensive military equipment and training.

For US, restrict time for servicemen shore leave.

In the event of an emergency push the panic button. "Maybe the kanos will come back and save us from the Chinese and ourselves."

Good idea. Has it been kept up? What condition is it in? It is strategically located and it keeps from having to build one some place else. It was bound to happen, like it or not. If the Philippines wants protection, then it has to provide a safe haven for our military. We'll do the rest.

You act like corruption has dried up and vanished after we left in 91! I remember what happened...10% were screaming at the top of their lungs for USA to get out and the other 90% wanted USA to stay. It was 20 million $ per year spent by service men and 70K jobs for filipinos at stake. Then the price for "rent" of the bases went from 300 million to 750 million if we still wanted to keep our bases there. The 10% was the most vocal and then the volcano blew right at that stage of the negotiations and the usa said were out.

All this talk about the pokspoks has me laughing. I can go to QC, Makati, Subic or Angeles city and right now this very minute without any bases opening are filled with whores!!!!

This is just a counter move by the USA to the aggressive actions of the Chinese....nothing more...nothing less.

It raises a lot of skepticism on my part. Sure, we may get extra protection from big brother USA. Sure, we're strengthening diplomatic ties. Sure, we may also strengthen our military by learning from the Americans. But what are the consequences of this? Forget the typical rallies of protest or the VFA or prostitution. I think it's more important to consider what the US wants out of this. I doubt that their only interest is using the bases..
