Why do prisons care about hunger strikes?
I've been thinking about successful protesters in prison who go on hunger strikes. Why does it work? What do the prisons care whether their prisoners are eating or not? As long as the prison presents its inmates with the option to eat, then surely they cannot be held accountable for the prisoners choices?
Please clarify what leverage the prisoners have that makes hunger strikes so effective.

Can you find an example where prison authorities gave in to a hunger strike? The only reason why I could see them giving in is to avoid the media and press and all that. However, my father was in prison, and the prisoners frequently went on strike and no one really cared.
