  • Alternative to "This essay aims"?

    I'm writing an essay about ww1, I want to round off my introductory paragraph with

    "This essay aims to explore the evidence, effect and significance of propaganda, and in addition to physical damage, the extent of psychological damage as well."

    However my English teacher hates the "In this essay" cliche, what's my alternative?

    Thanks!

  • "All over by christmas" Source?

    I'm writing an essay and I want to use this quote. I've looked around and the articles I've found just use this quote without referencing it. They just use it in inverted commas. Do you know of the source material?

  • Speaking at Mum's wedding advise?

    My mother's getting married in December this year, and as her father is no longer around I'll be giving her away, and I'll also be making a speech during the dinner/drinks part of the evening.

    This is aimed at anyone who's either been in a similar position, or been at a wedding (maybe your own!) where the person who gave the bride away made a speech:

    What of speech is expected of me? Is it just a short "thanks for coming", or it a more drawn out one where I'd either be sharing a short story on the bride, or something of the sort?

    How long should the speech be? Can you think of any examples of speeches I could reference from?

    I would Google this myself but I don't know what the name of my role is called...

    Thank you for any and all advice, it is much appreciated!

  • Simplify Rational Eq?

    Please answer this question with a step by step guide on how you did it. 10pts will be given to the best explanation.

    Simplify:

    (4/((2(x+1)))-(2x-1)/(x^2-1)

    This looks far nicer on wolfram:

  • Solution for Cycling in Suit?

    My sixth form has now made us come to school in suits rather than smart casual wear. I cycle to school. Suit trousers easily rip, and suit jackets get disfigured. + I don't want to ruin my suit by cycling. What would you do?

  • How strict are University grade requirements?

    I'm looking at different universities to apply to. My first choice would be Warwick, which asks for AAA. It's not an unreasonable target, however I think I'd more likely get A*AB. Would this generally be ok?

  • Why do prisons care about hunger strikes?

    I've been thinking about successful protesters in prison who go on hunger strikes. Why does it work? What do the prisons care whether their prisoners are eating or not? As long as the prison presents its inmates with the option to eat, then surely they cannot be held accountable for the prisoners choices?

    Please clarify what leverage the prisoners have that makes hunger strikes so effective.

  • Are dropped AS grades looked at?

    I'm year 12 doing my AS levels. I'm taking Maths, Business, English & Physics. I now know that I want to take on a business degree/ go to a business school. I'll be dropping Physics in August, however because of poor teaching/lack of interest I've lost all motivation to do well in Physics. Will universities look at your dropped AS grades even though they present an offer of only three A2 Grades (AAB/AAA)?

    Basically, I'll get the conditional grades that they ask for, but will they look at my AS physics grades as a determining factor?

    Cheers

  • What is the best way to store my spare phone battery?

    I have a Samsung G2 and I've bought an extended battery, which means the stock battery has been rendered useless for every day life. I'd like to keep the battery in good condition in case I ever need to carry a spare.

    What is the best way to store the battery so that it stays in the best condition?

    So far I've heard that I should keep it at 40% charge and in a cold (<0 degrees environment).

    What do you recommend?

    Thanks

  • How can you test the viability of a Business Idea without vulnerability?

    I'm studying Business Studies at A level, and I also want to start my own business when I leave education. I keep reading/hearing about how entrepreneurs should gather feedback ASAP from their business idea/model before they launch in and invest time and money into it. The thing is, no one wants to get Zuckerberg'd. How does one gather feedback for an initiave business idea, to test its viabiltiy, when there is a possibilty that your idea will get stolen by those who your opening up to?

  • If I start a quotation with someone speaking, do I use triple speech-marks?

    I want to quote a sentence, with the beginning of the quote starting with someone speaking. Do I use tripple quoation marks for this?

    I.E:

    "Quiet", says one of the Guardians behind the counter, and we hush like schoolgirls.

    I want to quote the above in an essay. Do I start the quote with quotations marks, so it would look like this:

    ""Quiet", says one of the Guardians behind the counter, and we hush like schoolgirls."

    OR

    '"Quiet", says one of the Guardians behind the counter, and we hush like schoolgirls.'

    All advise appreciated!

  • Motion Under Gravity question?

    A ball is thrown vertically upwards from ground level with initial speed of 7m/s. Assume that no resistance forces act on the ball, so it moves only under the influence of gravity.

    a) Find the maximum height of the ball

    Answer: 2.5m

    b) The ball hits the ground T seconds after it was thrown. Find T

    -----

    useful equations:

    s=ut+1/2at^2

    v=u+at

    v^2=u^2+2as

    Where: S = displacement U = initial velocity T = change in time A = acceleration V = final velocity

    For b), can you please explain how you got your answer as coherently as possible. I have the answer at the back of my textbook, I just don't know how to get to it.

  • Sketching Parabolas help?

    "Sketch the graph of y=x^2 - x - 6, marking all the intersections with the axes"

    Y = X^2 - X - 6

    Y = (X - 1/2)^2 - 25/4

    How do I go from this to sketching the parabola? (non calc).

    The vertex is (1/2 , 25/4) right? Then what?

    Thanks.

  • Find the co-ordinates of the minimum of the parabola?

    "By completeing the square, find the co-ordinates of the minimum of the parabola y=x^2 -10x +22."

    I've just revised how to complete the square, although I learnt it a different way this time. I worked it down to:

    (X - 5)^2 -3

    How do I find out the co-ordinates?

    Thanks
