    The U.S. got the Republic of Texas that had broken away from Mexico at the battle of San Jacinto in 1836. It had slaves which Santa Anna had said were illegal, thus the breaking away from Mexico, in order to keep their slaves. With Texas coming into the Union in 1845 slavery was greatly expaned.
