The Dred Scott decision came out in 1857. The Compromise of 1850 made the Missouri Compromise (1820) illegal because the Missouri Compromise had made slavery illegal in certain sections of the U.S.The Dred Scott decision made the Compromise of 1850 unworkable because it put the question of slavery up to a vote. A vote against slavery would not have held up against the Dred Scott decision and therefore there was no way to make slavery illegal because slaves were property and the government can not take private propeerty away from citizens of the U.S.
