How should I proceed?
A few weeks back I found rodent damage in my storage unit. This is not covered by insurance nor is the facility responsible, based on the contract. I asked the manager to cancel my automated payment for the month given the circumstances and he agreed. I informed him I would be vacating the unit within the next few weeks and he obliged. A couple of days later, however, I received a bill for the rent as well as a late penalty and a notice that my unit would be locked until I paid. I think it's ridiculous that I have to pay to be able to vacate my unit given the circumstances and after he agreed to cancel my payment. How should I proceed to successfully access my belongings without giving in to pay for a rodent-infested storage unit? Thanks.

Whenever you wish to cancel a written contract it is important to put it in writing.Ideally, you would have written to the manager after you spoke to him confirming the conversation. It's possible this is just a corporate mixup that can be easily resolved.
Write a letter to the company. Use the address on any correspondence they sent you. Make reference to the conditions and the verbal agreement with the manager (make sure you give his name and the date you spoke to him). If the company still insists that you pay, you might need to consult with an attorney to discuss your rights under the contract.
