Why did my computer die?

I recently (last Friday) bought a new computer, and tonight it just died out of the blue. No pops, no smoke (that i noticed) or anything like that, just suddenly powered off, never to come back on. The weird thing is, my pc speakers, that are powered by USB still switch on, and my phone still charges from the front USB port. But no activity inside the case at all, not even a fan twitch. At the time of the power down, my CPUs were all running at about 35 to 40 degrees celsius, and my GPU had just nosed over 50.

PSU: 550W

CPU: AMD FX 6100 Bulldozer 6-core CPU

GPU: NVIDIA GTX550 Ti

Motherboard: Gigabyte M68MT-S2

Update:

Do me hard: Power supply fan is not turning, although I've thought of a non power supply explanation for that. Perhaps it's not receiving the 'power on' signal from the mobo?

It's in sleep (hibernation) mode. The clue is that you CAN power things through the USB ports. Determine the awaken procedure from sleep mode for your computer and DO it. It's that simple. Oh and pay more attention to which button on your keyboard that you hit because that is a hot key that puts you CPU to sleep.

I must do that to mine at least once a year and it mystifies me as to WHICH damn button it is that does it.

Maybe the power supply or the monitor.
