Childs birthday party ettiquette?

I am having my sons 4th birthday party in a couple weeks. We plan on having it at about 2pm. Since we are having it after lunch time do we still serve food? Should we change the time to closer to lunch or dinner time, or just have cake and ice cream at 2pm? Either way works for me, of course just cake and ice cream would be less work and cheaper, but I wanna do the right thing.

Update:

WOW someone has some serious issues! I don't know you, you don't know me, why in the world would you say something like that? Enjoy being reported!

Cake and ice cream is fine - people who get too wound up in eating properly just don't know how to party in the first place. A kid's birthday party is where the termed "sugared up" originated - as well it should. If you really want to minimize the damage, get cupcakes and have the bakery put a letter on each one. But honestly, any self respecting four year old can get high on the ice cream to go with it.

These days, there will be parents who get cranked up if you're serving anything but carrots. Just have a fun birthday party with lots of games where everyone gets a prize, and everyone gets a turn. THe more you keep them moving, the more they won't eat so much it's a problem later on.

One great idea a friend had for her children - the family got gifts for the child, and the invitation for the party with friends requested a book that was then donated to the Children's Hospital in the birthday child's honor. It was a huge hit, and the hospital got new books for their patients. That one thing created a lot of good will that let them overlook the rest of the ordeal.

I believe opening the items after the party is a high-quality idea. It looks like when items are opened throughout a social gathering there may be practically a rush, lot's of trash, and stress to find out who the gift is from and write it down for the thanks notes. Plus you will have bunches of kids who wish to see or play with the presents, and children who suppose responsible and embarrassed after they failed to bring a gift as extravagant as an additional children. I suppose opening the presents after the celebration, makes their birthday pleasure final longer, and you do not need to rush. Sure some humans do wish to see your little one's response to the present, so perhaps you would take a photo of your baby opening or enjoying with their gift and send it together with the thanks notes?

That sounds like a pretty good idea, you could let the parents know to feed their child beforehand, and just have little treats for them to snack on as they play! Kids love candy, but remember, sugar=ENERGY. Hope it's a great party!
