Can we convert air conditioner unit from manual to remote control unit?

Question

we bought a second  hand window air conditioner which has knobs and switches

so we generally use switch on the air conditioner power socket but the switch gets damaged/burned due to excessive on and offs.

so we are wondering can we turn our remote less air conditioner to a remote controlled 
air conditioner?will it be safe to do that?

I asked a electrician and he said it's possible make the window ac remote controlled but we are not sure whether it will as reliable as those acs which are built remote controlled from the factory.

So need your advice and inputs about should we go ahead with the conversion(from manual control to remote control) or not?

Switch it on and off on the unit.

In theory it could be set up for remote control, with a smart engineer or a heavy duty remote outlet control.
