How old is too old to start riding a horse?

It's been a lifelong dream of mine to take care of a horse and trail ride. The problem is I am now nearly 59 years old. If I work to get myself in really good physical shape would this be possible, or is it a dream that I have to let go of?

I taught lessons at a barn for a couple summers and there were some ladies there who were 60-70... they started riding when they retired because they had time to do it then. So don't let it stop you.

You'll easily learn to walk and steer and stuff. Some people are more comfortable than others going faster (trot and canter), but I think it has more to do with personality than age, although kids tend to be more daring.

Keep in mind, however, that as you're learning, there will come a time when you fall off. One of the older ladies fell during her lesson and she decided it was safer to quit riding... kids bones are stronger than adults bones. But at the same time, I've been riding for over 10 years and haven't broken anything. I've fallen off a lot... I got stitches, I pulled muscles, I got scrapes and bruises, but I haven't broken anything.

Riding is great. I hope you decide to give it a try.

I don't think you will have to let this dream go. If your planning on buying and keeping your own horse, you will want to make sure you're in good condition. This will include mucking its stall which you have to purchase a wheel barrow and a pitchfork. Then be able to wheel a full wheelbarrow of muck and dump it onto a composting pile. Also owning your own horse will cost lots of money. But, If you were to lease a horse it would be a lot less work. If you pursued this dream you would want to buy or lease ( I recommend leasing) an older horse. This is because older horses are more safe, and subtle. Which is opposed form a young, green horse. An older horse will be less likely to spook or try to run or act wild. A good age for an old horse is about in its 20's. I really recommend leasing. I believe your dream will come true. Make sure you know about horses and how to act around them before deciding anything. Reading lots of articles about horse behavior will help. Also it would be good to learn about leasing.

    Good Luck!

You are NEVER too ancient to begin courses!! There is an olympic rider who did not begin driving til age 18! Riding is approximately the trouble you installed to driving & horses, the exceptional of your coaching, and enjoy within the saddle. The extra instances you journey per week the greater you'll get (with a well trainer, of direction!) You can turn out to be a high-quality rider after a just a yr or 2 of in depth coaching. Many persons begin driving of their 50's after taking a 30-a few yr hiatus, or by no means driving in any respect. If you are now not involved approximately competing in big indicates, any age is exceptional to begin driving. Might as good pursue your dream whilst you are nonetheless in a position!
