Groundfighting do you understand it at all ?

Groundfighting for self defense should not be seen as offensive like in combat sports such as BJJ,Sambo, Submission Wrestling and MMA, Groundfighting is like insurance in terms of self defense, if you are taken to the ground and have no knowledge of ground fighting what the hell are you gonna do ?curl up in the fetal position? how will you escape back to your feet without any knowledge of positioning in ground fighting , what if you get pinned? it's not about submissions like in combat sports it's about positioning ,control , I'm not saying that groundfighting is the be all and end all and I'm not saying most fights go to the ground but when they do what the hell are you gonna do if you've never done even a minimal amount of training in groundfighting, , it's better to have it and not need it , than to need it and not have it

Honestly watching people talk about complete ranges of self defense and then trashing groundfighting just shows how completely ignorant they are , they know nothing about it and are just a bad as UFC fanboys who think they're "experts" on the subject, educate yourselves before you start doing that, the same can be said to the UFC fanboys when they start trashing things like Kata without understanding it at all, there is no such thing as a useless training method or art form there are simply too many useless teachers

Update:

ironmongoose your the the kind of ignorant prick I'm talking about clearly you don't understand the point of this question and so you've taken offence to it ,so I would like to tell you, it's not a rant I genuinely would like to know if anyone really knows the point in learning groundfighting for self defense , Martial arts are my life, people that neglect and insult one of the most basic aspects of it is a **** and can **** off and die

I give you an A+ for your answer to your question.

In a self defense situation, you want to know enough grappling skills to get you free to get back on your feet. Voluntarily staying on the ground in a self defense situation will get you killed or seriously injured.

I agree with Cheetah... on both points :-)

I think too many people have the wrong idea about what groundfighting is supposed to be about. If you are taken to the ground, you'll need those skills to get up. But too many people with only groundfighting experience think the appropriate thing to do is to take it down and go at it.

This might be fine in a mindless schoolyard fight or a fight over a girl (or boy) friend. But when you don't know who the assailants are, or how many they are, or what they're armed with, I just can't see the logic in wanting to take someone to a place that limits your sight and movement.

That being said, you'll need those groundfighting skills to get back on your feet. I think it's a necessary tool for any self-defense to have; but it shouldn't be the first tool you pull out of the toolbox. You're liable to ruin the job.

lol good one I asked something similar A while ago but more along the lines of "if you don't know how to ground fight what do you plan to do if it happens? hope it goes away?"

and your right in self defence you only need to know enough to get off the ground but same can be said about standup fighting for self defence as in you only need to know enough to get away safely.

in self defence you don't need to know to kill your adversaries just get away from them so you don't get hurt anymore while combat sports & combatives are different and your often required to fight to the knockout in the former or the the death in the latter.

your also right about there being to many crappy teachers and you would be surprised how many karate schools are teaching kickboxing with a gi on instead of real karate with all the grappling & ground fighting in it.

This is not the place for rants, and I've been posting pretty much the exact same thing in my answers for the past three years.
