Many give the region the name 'Saarland'.

It is an area rich in such raw materials as coal and iron ore. The Saar River wanders through the region. Following World War I the region was administered by the League of Nations but a Plebiscite taken in 1935 demonstrated the desire for the region to be reunited with Germany. 1935 is a year which falls after the demise of the Weimar Republic and sees the rise of Nazism and Adolf Hitler.

One effect of the Plebiscite was simply to add impetus to Hitler's nationalism and provide raw materials for rearmament in preparation for World War II.
