State Inspection Mechanic?

Until recently I had never heard of such a thing, the requires you to get some inspection every year. What exactly do they do and what does it cost? Is this another "Big Brother" thing set by the government? Does it really help reduce any problems?

It all depends on where you are from but I have been doing vehicle state inspection in Texas for over 34 years and in Texas again depending on what part a person is from it can cost you between $14.50 to $39.75 if you are required to have the vehicles emissions checked.

Items that are checked are as follows.

    1. Horn

    2. Windshield Wipers

    3. Mirror

    4. Steering

    5. Seat Belts

    6. Brakes (system) (Parking - beginning with 1960 models)

    7. Tires

    8. Wheel Assembly

    9. Exhaust System

    10. Exhaust Emission System (beginning with 1968 models)

    11. Beam Indicator (beginning with 1948 models)

    12. Tail Lamps (2); (1) if 1959 model or earlier

    13. Stop Lamps (2); (1) if 1959 model or earlier

    14. License Plate Lamp (1)

    15. Rear Red Reflectors (2)

    16. Turn Signal Lamps (beginning with 1960 models)

    17. Head Lamps (2)

    18. Motor, Serial, or Vehicle Identification Number

    19. 1988 & newer - inspect for window tinting or coating

    20. Gas caps on vehicles 2-24 model years old.

    21. Check for evidence of Financial Responsibility.

It set by the state and yes it works to keep the junkers off the roads and this makes it safe for everyone.

I Absolutely believe a "State, Safety Inspection" reduce problems.

I've seen, personally 70 or 80 lbs tires held on by nothing more than a brake caliper. Tie-rods, held in place by a mere fraction of metal, countless others. I also see them after the parts fail. (far more expensive, and dangerous)

I've also heard from folks up-set, because "big-brother" "made" them fix their broken car.

A state inspection is the bare (bare) minimum needed to to drive a car safely at 70 mph down a highway or in city streets. Or in your neighborhood, with your children. running about.
