I'm a vegatarian and I unknowingly ate meat. How do I stop feeling guilty?

Ok, so I was eating this soup with kimchi, which my mom told me was "clean" ( meaning there is no shrimp brine ect.). Anyway, as I chewed, I noticed something with a meaty texture and realized that there was meat. Now I realized I was eating some animal's family member who probably wasn't treated nicely before it died. And that I helped keep the meat industry going. Is there some cleansing ritual or something I can do? I have only been vegatarian for 3 years, is there something I've missed?

If you did not mean it, your guilt may be enough penance for you. If you truly are feeling guilty, take that as the punishment.

I would try to apologise to the animal, say you're sorry, it helps.

Tell the animal and its family you didn't mean it. They will listen.

Plant a flower or tree and make it an offering to the animal. I really think this helps.

The animal was already dead, it was already sold by the meat industry, processed, and in your soup. You did nothing wrong. Don't feel bad. I'm guessing the meat was beef, cattle do not have families or feel emotion for other members of the herd. Mommas cry for about an hour when their babies are taken away, then resume a normal life.

I respect your decision to be a vegetarian, and don't mean to put you down, but I'm just stating the facts. Don't feel bad for one slip up, and just don't eat meat again. By the way, butcher shops are not THAT cruel. Watch a video sometime. We had to at my school. And no, I'm not some cold heartless person. I love animals, I just face the facts.

It happens to all of us. I was in Mexico at an all-inclusive. They marked their vegetarian dishes by having a broccoli beside the item. I didn't have my glasses so I ordered the only entree on the menu at this restaurant that was marked as vegetarian. When it came and i bit into the stir fry dish of veggies I got this odd texture, tasting thing. I thought it was an artichoke heart or something. It was awful. I ate some of the veggies and decided to try this thing again. The texture was off and it wasn't a vegetable. When I got looking at it closely I could see it was a meat of some kind. I found a pair of glasses and sure as ****, it was TUNA! Tuna in the vegetarian dish.

You can't beat yourself up over this. It happens. Move on, you're doing the best you can. We can't control everything. Let it go.

Don't worry! You didn't mean to do it. It's not your fault, you didn't know. Don't worry I've been vegetarian for 5 years and I stupidly ate beef jerky (my friend told me it was a dried fruit) and I felt so bad about it afterward, but there is really nothing you can do about it. You are doing a good thing being a vegetarian sacrificing your own diet to help out an animal. Great job being who you are!!!

You're being melodramatic. I'm vegan and I totally get not wanting to consume animal flesh, but for goodness' sake you didn't buy it - your mom did. You can't be responsible for her purchases. Brush your teeth, let it go and move on. And start cooking your own meals so you can sure of what's in them.

Leah, if you had not eaten that meat, someone else would have. Regardless, it happened. The best you can do for yourself is to try to forget about it.

In life there has to be balance.

You have been mean to animals, so to balance it, you must be mean to vegetables.

Punch a beetroot for 20 minutes. That should do it.

Step down from your pedestal. Done.

So you feel guilty about something you unknowingly did? But yet the things you do that knowingly kills animals is alright with you? Hmm.

Get over it. You are eating insects in your fruit and vegetables everyday.
