do some people actually NEED braces for their dental health?

A person close to me said that she needed braces, and she got them, but she needed a lot of preliminary work, like some root canals and something else (I forget). She has frequent ongoing dentist appointments (maybe orthodontists, I don't know). She said she "needed braces" for her dental health, and that something was misaligned. It's caused another family member of mine several thousands of dollars. It's my contention that she just wanted them badly, for cosmetic reasons. Do some people actually need braces for their dental health? I think no; people have only been getting braces for the past 100 years or so, if that. Some developed countries aren't nearly as gung-ho as we are about dentistry.

Update:

She's in her early 50s and had tmj in the past but has not in the last 20 years worn a retainer or had any stated issues with it.

I believe that some people do actually need braces for their dental but also muscle/joint health. This can happen, for example, if someone's teeth are so badly misaligned that it causes a bad bite, problems with articulation and other more or less serious issues. Arguably, misaligned teeth may be one of the underlying factors behind developing TMJ Disorder -- you overstretch muscles constantly and put too much pressure on one or both of the jaw joints in an attempt to balance out the misalignments in your mouth, which can lead to TMJ.

Yes.why not? Braces are not a jewelery or something. It is a treatment. I have overcrowded teeth, overbite and TMJ (which is very painful) and thats why my dentist recommended me to an orthodontist. And now i'm getting braces next week. Age doesn't matter. Braces are not only for kids. Remember that "braces is a treatment to fix bite and misaligned jaw etc so it is a health treatment not a toy"
