How long until child is classed as bilingual?
How many years of learning and speaking two languages does it take before someone is classed as bilingual? My son has been speaking English at home since birth but speak Welsh at school for almost 2 years and is now easily fluent. He is 5 years old. He often speaks both languages at the same time, with a sentence being half Welsh and half English (much to the confusion of my brain, which is primed for English most of the time).
I read somewhere it takes a certain amount of years for a learner to be classed as bilingual but does this change if the proficiency is very good, or the learning is fast, as with a child?

If he is fully fluent in welsh and English then it is safe to say he is bilingual now.

My children found out 2 languages developing up, and wouldn't have verbal problems. So have my 2 grandsons. There have been instances with my daughter that I consider she will have been sluggish in switching gears, however as an grownup she is fluent in each languages, as is my oldest grandson (the opposite one is most effective 2 years ancient, so now not fluent in any language but.) So I do not consider introducing 2 languages even as is an limitation.
