  • Trying to shift weight - only exercise is walking?

I am trying to lose a good bit of weight, roughly 50 pounds. On what I am eating normally, the weight was going neither up nor down however I was getting very little exercise a day. I have now started walking to get my youngest from school (a round trip of over 3 miles). Will this be enough to start shifting the weight? I had ankle surgery after a bad accident which has left me struggling to do other exercises (such as running) that put too much pressure on the bad side.

  • How long until child is classed as bilingual?

How many years of learning and speaking two languages does it take before someone is classed as bilingual? My son has been speaking English at home since birth but speak Welsh at school for almost 2 years and is now easily fluent. He is 5 years old. He often speaks both languages at the same time, with a sentence being half Welsh and half English (much to the confusion of my brain, which is primed for English most of the time).

I read somewhere it takes a certain amount of years for a learner to be classed as bilingual but does this change if the proficiency is very good, or the learning is fast, as with a child?

  • Covering hair when visiting Islamic Centre?

I am taking my Cub Scouts to visit the Islamic Centre in our city. I am wondering if I would need to cover my hair when we go? Also, if my one female Cub Scout (aged 8) would need to as well? I obviously don't want to offend anybody and want to follow the rules of their religion, but don't want to cover my hair unless I need to. Thanks for any help!

  • Did I handle this right?

My 5 year old has a lovely best friend, who has ADHD and possibly Aspergers. This wee boy always wants to hug my son, which he isn't too fond of! He's not allowed to hug in school so the minute school is out, the little lad will try and hug my son.

So I made a suggestion to my 5 year old. He is currently obsessed with secret handshakes (we all have them - his dad, me and both his brothers have individual ones!!). So I said "why don't you make up a secret handshake with him, then next time he wants to hug you, you can say let's do this instead".

Can any parents with kids with ADHD/Aspergers let me know if I did the right thing? I don't want to tell the boy off for hugging, he's only doing it because they're best friends! And he's only 5!! So nasty comments about any of it please, i'll just delete them!

  • Losing weight with minimal exercise?

I have a fair bit of weight to lose but at the moment am unable to do exercise due to recovering from an achilles tendon operation. I am eating around 1200 calories a day, spread through the day but am wondering if this will make a difference if I am unable to exercise?

  • Post operative water retention/edema?

I had an achilles repair operation on 23rd Feb and now have edema around my foot. Not a huge amount, just enough so that my son says I have "memory foam skin" lol! Other than keeping my leg raised, what else can help get rid of it? If it worsens I will go to my docor but i'd rather handle it without a visit.

  • 5 year old grinding his teeth?

My 5 year old son has recently started grinding his teeth. Its a horrible sound and is surely bad for his teeth! Does anybody have any advice on how to get him to stop it, other than having to go to the dentist about it?

  • Weight loss mission - bad ankle?

I'm needing to lose some weight (not going to say how much, thats personal lol) but have a very badly damaged ankle that's due an operation in May. Does anybody have any tips on aerobic/cardio exercises that I can do that will put little to no strain on my ankle? The pain and restrictions I have with it rules out things like jumping jacks and running, although I can walk okay on some days. But that seldom gets my heart pumping! Any tips would be great.

  • Blisters from cantharone treatment?

I had som cantharone treatment on my feet on friday for verrucas. I'm in total agony from them and can't put any pressure on my right foot other than my tip toes. I'm unsure whether to pop the blisters as it's those that are causing my inability to walk - the pressure on them when I put my foot down is unbearable. Searches online leave me baffled as there are two camps - the pop and the not to pop! I need to be able to drive tomorrow to get my kids to school - should I pop them, only the ones completely necessary? Before you say go to the doctors, it's a sunday!!!

  • Will a "True Blood" cover of Dear Reckoning be released on paperback?

I have the first 10 Sookie Stackhouse books in paperback all with the True Blood style covers. Does anybody know if the most recent book, Dead Reckoning, will be released with a True Blood style/design cover in paperback any time this year?

  • How often is worryingly often for a toddler to have earache?

My 4 year old son has earache - again. It's the second time this year. I'm taking him to the doctors in the morning before anybody suggests it. Just wondering how often is worryingly often? My older 2 children rarely suffered from earaches, not like this. He's very weepy, high (but not excessively high) temperature but is drinking plenty. I am assuming it's another ear infection which will mean more antibiotics. Any ideas why he's getting them frequently? Could it be just down to having started school in september, and being around so many children?

  • How long should it take to lose 4 stone?

With a healthy diet of around 1500 calories a day (as 5 smaller meals a day), one 'treat' day a week (to save me going insane lol!), monday to friday doing an hour workout at the gym (weekends I cant go as I have 3 kids), can I expect to have lost the weight by this time next year? I want to do it the healthy way, and know 1-2 pounds is a healthy amount to lose a week, so would 4 stone be a reasonable expectation by this time next year?

  • No period for 4 weeks, neg pregnancy test?

I've not had a period for 4 weeks. 6 home pregnancy tests were negative and the doctors test was also negative. She poked and prodded my stomach a little and said it all seems okay. I'm 32 and have children so knew it would be negative - I think i'd have known if I was pregnant!

When I asked the doctor when I should be concerned over not having a period, she said to wait 6 months. SIX MONTHS!! I'm usually as regular as clock work.

Every 3 or 4 days i have some mild cramping that lasts a few hours, whichI kept thinking was my period starting but nothing.

Anybody experienced the same thing and have any ideas what it could be? Obviously as i've said, i've been to the doctor for a pregnancy test which was negative so it's not that. What else could it be?

  • How long does it take for anticoagulants to leave your system?

I donated stem cells recently in London (a week ago today was my second day donation) and I keep finding/getting new bruises with the smallest bumps. One I found this morning goes from my wrist down about 3 inches and is about an inch wide! I have no idea how it happened.

When I donated I obviously got anticoagulants. Does anybody know how long it takes for it to leave my body? Curious if that's why I seem to be bruising so easily?

  • Hamsters fighting, help?

My dwarf hamsters have started fighting lots lately. Though they are from the same litter, one is a fair bit bigger than the other and has been bullying his little brother so much over the past few days. I'm going to get another cage so they can be apart but i'm wondering if anybody could tell me WHY this has started happening? Has the bigger one just realised that his little brother is a target or could it be something else?

  • Homemade shortbread/chocolates?

I've asked a few questions regarding things for my Christmas hampers and you've all been awesome!

What I hope is the last question now (lol). I'm putting homemade shortbread and little chocolates into the hampers but know that they won't keep long. How close to Christmas will I need to make them?

  • Strawberry jam seems very 'liquid'?

Just made my first batch of strawberry jam. It seemed to be 'skinning' over on the plate when I tested it quite well but looks REALLY liquid in the jars...Have I messed up - should I have boiled it longer or will it settle as it cools?

  • How to make homemade cupcake MIXTURE to put in a Christmas hamper?

I've seen this somewhere but I can't for the life of me find it. How would I make a cupcake mixture to go in a hamper? As in, just add egg/water to make it? I imagine it's just a case of mixing the ingredients that are left (as in sugar, flour, butter) but wanted to see if anybody has any ideas.Thank you!

  • True Blood Season 3 UK?

I don't think season 3 is already airing in the UK but does anybody know when it will be available to those with BT Vision? I can't remember what channel it was shown on when they aired season 2, I think it was channel 4? I'm desperate for a True Blood fix and can't get Sky where I am, only BT Vision (which is fine by me, bar this issue lol!). Can anybody help?
