Confused about book publishing?
Hello,
I started writing a Childrens book years ago, when I was 18, but didn't persue it, as thought far to many people were out there trying their luck, and gave up.
I've recently started writing again, and have managed the first half of a childrens book.
My question is, how would I go about finding a possible publisher? I know it sounds silly, but I'm weary of emailing or sending copys of my book in case someone steals it, how can I make it mine? Or copywrite it before sending a copy?
Thanks

Wary, not weary. Unless you've already sent it out to 100 publishers and they've all stolen it... And copyright, not copywrite. That's what people who create adverts do.
Finish the book, then worry about how you might get it published. You can't sell what isn't ready to buy.
Publishers don't steal manuscripts. They don't need to.

No offense but I wouldn't even try to get published until you have worked on your spelling issues. You have six full sentences here and already I can see a number of spelling and grammatical mistakes. No one is going to be interested in a book with these kinds of mistakes. Also no one will be interested in a book that isn't finished.
If your heart is still set on this then you need to try and find yourself a literary agent. Very few publishers will even consider work that isn't submitted through an agent first. Do some market research - find out which agencies represent your kind of book. Then you can visit their websites and read their submission guidelines.
Of course you can apply for a copyright but no real agency/publisher is going to try and steal your work. As for the weary part - well, that's how the publishing industry works. Publishing a book is a long, hard process and you need to make sure your heart is 100% in it before you try this career path.

Hi - You are right, it is a tough world out there for writers. It is the ones who work hard on their craft and are diligent, and never give up who succeed (and some luck and also those people who just happen to get lucky with bad writing).
I just read a good book and it said that the publishing world is not really a mystery. You just have to follow all the proper channels. I recommend finding some Writers Digest Books on publishing and finding and agent. Arabella is correct though - wait to send in your submission in to an agent once it is a finished work. This is partially because far too many agents have gotten excited about a work only to have the author take forever to get a finished work back to them. Agents can't submit unfinished works to publishers.
I recommend reading "the breakout Novelist" its a Writers Digest book.Keep up your perseverance!

I suggest you look into the Society of Children Book Writers or something similar to learn more about the industry. They have a helpful FAQ section for you:

You don't need to copyright your work - your version is your original expression and the law is on your side. (BTW - You can't copyright an idea, only your version of that idea). Legitimate editors don't steal manuscripts.

Read "Children's Author's and Illustrator's Market." It explains the whole publishing process.
And stop yammering and worrying about copyright. Only ignorant rank amateurs do that. Once you write something, it's automatically copyrighted. The publisher takes care of registering the copyright for you.

Well if you have all the means you can try self publishing. Try: http://bookpal.com.au,/ you can ask first for a quote from them before sending them your manuscripts.
Also for Print-Ready Children's Books - http://bookpal.com.au/OtherLinks/PrintReadyFiles/C...
Good Luck on your book!
