1992 cadillac sedan deville wont start?

changed the nuetral switch on the transmission chkd all the fuses ignition switch works good all power comes on when i turn key ,but when i try to start it it wont do anything, starter is good i can jump starter and all it does is spin over every once in awhile it will bust off for a second .what is the little black thing at the base of the steering colomn?? there is 3 different areas for fuses and relays i chkd all of them like i said .....anyone knolw what maybe wrong

    There are all kinds of things it could be. I would check first for the neutral safety interlock switch. If it is bad or out of adjustment, nothing happens when you turn the key. Almost anything else will give some kind of indication from clicking to dimming of lights.

    It is the starter if it is not turning over at all. If it was the alternator it would turn over (make a start sound) but since it does nothing it is the starter. So in my opinion i can say that there is an 80% chance it is the starter the other 20% problem could be there is something wrong with your cars computer. It is not the battery. You just ended up running it dead trying to start your car without a starter.

    Sorry, but no way to teach you the theory behind automotive in just 1 easy step. I suggest you get the phone & call the tow company & haul it off to either the dealership or a reliable repair shop. Hopefully you dont live in my area because I hate getting those old hoopty's in my bay.

    Also depends on your definition of starter spin. Either starter is bad, distributor pickup sensor is bad or something wrong with the distributor itself

    you have a bad bendix the gear that contacts the flywheel .
