why do most humans sleep at night instead of sleeping during the day?

    The "Preservation and Protection" theory holds that sleep serves an adaptive function. It protects the animal during that portion of the 24-hour day in which being awake, and hence roaming around, would place the individual at greatest risk.Organisms do not require 24 hours to feed themselves and meet other necessities. From this perspective of adaptation, organisms are safer by staying out of harm's way, where potentially they could be prey to other, stronger organisms. They sleep at times that maximize their safety, given their physical capacities and their habitats.

    All organisms have a circadian rhythm, which means that over a 24 hour the levels of different hormones change and with that the control of metabolism. For humans, the hormones that cause higher metabolic activity increase during the day causing us to be active and then decrease during the evening, causing us to feel tired and sleep.

    Other features of humans such as good colour vision for day time activity and poor night vision fit in with this, making us naturally diurnal.

    Nocturnal animals show the opposite pattern, while crepuscular animals active at dawn and dusk, show two peaks with a tail off in activity in between.

    Because during the night, it's more dark so cars cannot get around, it's really calm

    And it's not to bright for your eyes! Also it's cold at night do you wouldn't want to be awake then :P

    Melatonin is a compound in us which is produced during night (because Its production is stopped during day time by light). This compound makes us feel drowsy and sleep and regulates our sleep cycle..

    Human nature if exhaustion, it's sort of universal. Although you could change you pattern to the point where you become exhausted during the day if you had/wanted to.

    It is remotely related to the formation of our planetary system, rotation of earth and its movement around the sun. All this created a kind of cycle and one of them is circadian cycle/rhythm.Internally, it is related to melatonin secreted by pineal gland which induces sleep. This hormone is secreted in the dark ,that is, night.

    Because night time is dark and easy to sleep in. Daytime is bright and pisses us off when we can't sleep.
