Knocking/rattling from engine compartment?

Hello,

I'm stumped:

2004 Mazdaspeed Miata, [aftermarket] 5spd manual transmission, otherwise all stock. Starting about 200 miles ago, I heard a rattle coming from the engine compartment. It was worst when idling/low RPM and would go away when revved above 2500. It's steadily gotten worse and is now a bad rattling/knocking/squeaking sound like 2 large hunks of metal banging into each other and squeaking intermittently like a rusty bolt. It happens in any gear including reverse, with the clutch in or out, moving or stopped, and now when I rev the rattling gets louder and more pronounced. I'm sure it's not a loose pipe or cat cover, etc, and I believe it's coming from the inside of the engine/transmission.

I'm going to take it to a shop, but I want to give them a pointer on where to start so they're not charging me tons just poking around cluelessly - what are a couple good starting points for a problem like this? Clutch? Valves/timing? Bearing? What inside the engine/transmission could cause this?

If anyone has experienced this problem it would be great to hear from you, thanks!

Definitely a valve problem. Could be a lifter or push rod especially.

Check the heat shields on the turbo and the exhaust. There may be a crack in a weld that is making the noise worse. It could just be that some one has left a wrench behind the last time it was in the shop.

It can not be a bad push rod, or a need for valve adjustments, because this is a DOHC engine and the valve stem clearance is not adjustable.

you may desire to proceed intently while doing this. Like great guy reported, circulate away the vehicle working, keep the spray removed from the distributor or any electric container, purely on the steel engine itself. and attempt to no longer use complete stress spray, from time to time in case you have caked on grease, you may desire to, yet while this is purely a sprint greasy, i might circulate with as little extreme stress as you could. And, keep a chum's call and get in touch with huge style obtainable, in the experience that your motor vehicle cuts off and it won't restart. keep a can of WD-40 with you, and you're able to spray interior the distributor if it gets moist and prevents working. greater effective to have the coverage products before, earlier attempting this. i've got stress-washed many an previous motor vehicle, and had them stall in some situations, purely had to enable them to dry out for awhile. yet do no longer do it on a thank you to a activity interview, or something important, in case you strand your self with a moist ignition equipment! - The Gremlin guy -
