Steel-line garage door? Help?

My friend has a steel-line garage door, (remote control operated), it's only a few years old. It's starting to play up. When closing the door it's closes in the regular manner half the way then bashes to the ground. Anyone got any idea of what the problem would be, thanks

    Hi,

This is Steel-Line Technical Support. It sounds like either the force margin settings or limits need to be adjusted. After a period of time a door will lose some spring tension and the motor picks up on this and both the door and motor may need servicing.

If you have more questions, please call us on 1300 427 243 or 07 3713 3200; or email to enquiries@bossoperators.com.au

    Thank you!

I agree with a couple of these answers with one added note:

Firstly, if the door is crashing down as you describe then there is definitely a spring problem. Even if you find you don't have a broken spring you may want to have a door professional check and make sure that the correct springs were installed with the door. No door should ever crash down and they should always be properly balanced so that they are easily opened by hand.

Second, you may want to make sure that the door isn't disconnecting from the operator as it travels. We occassionally come across instances in which an operator's traveler (the part that locks into the opener rail and pulls/pushes the door) is malfuntioning and randomly disconnecting itself. This can cause the door to suddenly stop, open or close regardless of what the opener is trying to do since the door has now disconnected itself from the opener's traveler.

    Hope this helps!

Festus is right on! With the door closed you can inspect the coil springs, use an inspection mirror on the backside of them. If one is broken it is best to call a garage door service company, those springs have to be sized properly, installed exactly identical, and then tensioned exactly identical. If you're not too familiar with the tensioning the garage door could open/close at an angle or get destroyed. It ain't easy to get it just right.

The only other thing it could possibly be is the set screws on the drive sprocket came loose, but that should cause problems in all positions (almost fully open, almost fully down, or anywhere in between). Don't just tighten them, use a little BLUE loctite to keep them tight. Don't use RED or GREEN loctite!

Well, it seems to be a mechanic problem. There are two options to my opinion. One is to call a professional service to have a look and repair it, and the other one is to buy and install a new one. More tips you can find on the web pages of companies dealing with home improvement trades, like Velux or Velfac (http://www.velfac.se/), for example. But for sure it is a technical problem and if your friend's garage door's warranty hasn't expired yet you'd better call their service to fix it.

Go inspect the spring above the door. More than likely it has broken. Inspect it closely to see if there is a break in it. I'd recommend hiring a door company to replace it, It's not really a homeowner project. I'd expect between $125.00 to $175.00 to fix.
