How realistic do you think shtf scenarios are?
I have a Saiga 7.62 that I always say I would use if something terrible happened. I didn't get the gun for that purpose though. I got it primarily because it was cool and I wanted something highly penetrative for occasional hog hunts.
I have a plan for a shtf scenario, but that's make sure my girlfriend and my family are safe. My dad served many years in the Army and National Guard. His home is stocked with guns and ammo so him, my mom, my turtle, and my dog are safe. My girlfriend and I are in my apartment with more than enough guns/ammo for different purposes and my small weapons collection I collect for my martial arts/fighting fascination. So we are safe. My sister is with her boyfriend who used to sell guns on the street illegally and consequently the man is an experienced marksman and has plenty of guns. All of the men in this situation are southern born and raised so taking care of ourselves without the aid of grocery stores and electricity isn't a big deal. We know how to gather food, find shelter, and protect ourselves and our families.
This brief description of my "plan" though is just me trying to make sure I have an idea of what we will do if things did get out of hand. I although, highly doubt that will happen anytime soon and don't prepare for it as strongly as others. I don't go out and buy things just to survive when shtf. I believe in being a survivalist, but I do this by practicing good survival skills: fishing, hunting, cleaning game, and spending time outdoors so that they are never foreign to me. These survival skills though are also hobbies of mine.
I don't have a stockade of canned food or duffel bag full of MREs because I honestly feel like the whole idea is a little bit ridiculous. I make sure I have plenty ammo and means to gather the neccessities to survive so I won't be caught with my pants down if feces did hit the proverbial fan. So how realistic do you think shtf scenarios are?
And please don't bash me and my thoughts or call me trolling. This is an honest question. If you think I am out of order for feeling the way I do please politely try to change my mind.
My profile also says Profile was made in July of 2006. I was 16 6 years ago. You can even read the "about me" and tell I was 16 when I wrote it. And apartment full of guns= my Marlin Model 60, a couple of shotguns, an M1 carbine, and a Saiga 7.62. I haven't even updated my profile since I made it. I just put a picture on my profile since I've been using YA more now that I'm working at a desk for the summer. I hunted occasionally but didn't like it because I didn't like the gore of cleaning squirrels after hunts with cousins/dad. Eventually I got over it. The main reason I said he is a pretty good marksman is because we go to the range together and I've seen him place tight groups on targets 75 yards out with a 9mm. Not because he was training, but he just loves firearms that much.
And toad you are apparently an adult due to the rant you just had about a simple question I made, correct? Everyone of your answers is a rant. Is that what you as an adult d

You ask my opinion about "How realistic do you think shtf scenarios are?". Okay, natural disasters in the last few yearshave shown a need for people to be prepared to go without electricity and the conveniences of the modern world for a while.
Otherwise, there are no zombies, the entire world is not going to be snapped back into the stone age and, IMHO, most of the city-dwelling "survivalists" wouldn't last more than a week in the cruel wilderness, especially if there are OTHER armed nutbags trying to steal their stuff. I expect that Darwin's theory would prevail and most of these people would be eaten by snakes or something.
I am in agreement in almost every case with Toad, Bear Crap, August, Lana, Chris and many others here who have actual knowledge and experience. Glacierwolf is at least partially correct a lot of the time, but YOU (being wise and all-knowing) wouldn't want to listen to any of them either.
Since my Lyingbastert meter pegged shortly after reading your post, I really don't care what you say or think, since you seem to be under the assumption that Cold Truth = Rant. Whatever, Skippy.
By the way, Lana . . . Do you still have the Bunny Guy / Prepper link? It seems kind of fitting for this guy. I can't find it.

"I don't have a stockade of canned food or duffel bag full of MREs because I honestly feel like the whole idea is a little bit ridiculous. I make sure I have plenty ammo and means to gather the neccessities to survive so I won't be caught with my pants down"
Really? Haven't thought much about it have you. You don't think the local animal and fish population would drop to almost 0 overnight if people were starving? You don't think there will be hundreds of hunters and fishermen out there every day looking for food? Local populations can not possibly live off the land these days. There just isn't enough wildlife to feed all the people who would be looking for it.
Guns aren't going to keep you safe anyway. Only your brain can do that and you aren't using yours properly. You can be armed to the teeth and I can still pick you off from a hidden spot two hundred yards away. I can just wait until you come around a corner where I was waiting and wack you in the head with a ball bat. Every idiot thinks guns are the answer to staying safe. They are just another tool. A smart man with a pocket knife will stay alive while an idiot with a shotgun will die.

I think you are out of order. Your profile says you are 16 but you live in an apartment alone with guns?
You list "survival skills" like you have never done any of that. Spending time outdoors is not a skill. If you had actually done what you claim, you would know that.
More importantly, you say in your profile and other questions that YOU DONT HUNT. So how is it that you can practise hunting while not hunting?
Selling guns illegally/or legally does not make someone skilled with them or a marksman. That is rediculous. Again, anyone who has ever shot a gun or owned one would realise fast that just having them nearby does not increase your shooting abilities.
There is nothing honest about your question. It has teen fantasy written all over it. You are trolling or emotionally disturbed. Either way you are lying.
EDIT: 16+6=22. Not the 20 you claim to be now. Sooooo.... Still lying. Why don't you practise spending some more time outdoors and getting mad skilz at not being in the AC on your computer making up stories.

Most are so far beyond logic and reason its not funny. 1 person, 20 people etc, are not going to hold off the end of the world because they have a bunch of guns. The govt isn't knocking on your door, we're not going to civil war, and as funny as they can be, zombies aren't going to happen.
In the real world having an arsenal makes you a high priority target and you'll be dead the first time your head appears above ground. The guy with a couple hunting rifles is a zero priority target and will become part of the group that scopes you at 500 yards and you won't even be aware of him.

Story time! There were thousands of people who thought they were safe and went about their daily lives. Then an earth quake caused a massive tsunami that wiped away 280,000 of them;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Indian_Ocean_ear...
Now I could list all the earth quakes and other natural disasters that killed millions and millions of people in the last few centuries but I leave that to you to look up. Fact is people don’t think beyond their everyday lives. They are over all stupid and naive. Some are so stupid they may live in a high crime area and never worry about being raped, robbed or murdered but are scared to death of zombies that don’t exist.
The fact is we could have any number of natural disasters wreck havoc with our social and government infrastructure. There have been many riots that turned a city into a war zone. Our economy could collapse. Terrorists could set off biological weapons or even nuclear weapons killing tens of millions in a very short time. But people laugh at those ideas. Well until it happens. I had a relative that worked in the Twin Towers who reassured family and friends that, that tall building was very safe. We all know how that ended. I have family in Florida who survived many hurricanes. You don’t have to explain how dangerous those are to them, yet there are still thousands in Florida who don’t have a clue.
So don’t worry, your turtle will be fine; they can swim, have an armor shell and can survive nuclear fall out better than we can. But as for you, you just don’t get how dangerous this world can be. And as for your experience that you think has you ready; it does NOT.
And by the way your sisters boyfriend is a criminal, I wouldn’t advertize that.
Note I am taking the rest of your claims with skepticism. I have been around for over half a century, visited 3rd world countries and have vast experience with wilderness survival. Unlike you I have had people try to kill me, rob me and I have gone without food for 2 weeks and survived 60 below zero winters all alone in the wilderness for months in a make shift shelter. I am a survivor. So even though I’m an old man, I would have FAR better odds of surviving SHTF than you. I suggest you reevaluate things.

SHTF is pretty unlikely. the chances where you are in a situation where it's dog-eats-dog type of anarchy going on is about as likely as me winning the state lottery that I never play.
But still no matter how unlikely it is for total anarchy SHTF, it feels nice to have an AKM with armor piercing tracers under the bed, a Mosin Nagant with armor piercing incendiary ammo in the closet, a Glock 19 next to my pillow and a 500 S&W Magnum carbine in my car all the time.
Source(s): i feel safe. because if the world suddenly descends into total anarchy and i find I need ot defend myself, I have my trusty .500 S&W Magnum rifle that can put 12" holes in people with me almost all the time. *12" holes is an estimate, there's no way to know without shooting someone. - Anonymous9 years ago
some are more realistic than others .. what is NOT realistic is thinking you will survive if you are in a situation where you need 50 guns and thousands of rounds of ammo .. that is ridiculous .. you would survive if your in a good location and can lay low and are self sufficient ... typical 'realistic' scenario -
.. we get into it with Iran and the US gets limited nuked by either china or russia .. everything comes to a standstill, martial law is declared .. of course all the idiots with guns are busy killing each other for scraps after a few weeks, then they send in the the UN to round people up and organize them into labor camps and relocate whos left .. thats probably after they gas or something else the real trouble spots to eliminate them .. those that may do ok and miss most of the 'fun' will be in out of the way places and not popping off weapons at neighbors .. eventually the smart ones may band together and form a resistance of guerilla fighters against the new order .. who knows .. thats a grey area .. there may not be much left to fight for at that point ..

Actually hurricanes, floods & earthquakes are more realistic threats. Guns have little to do with dealing with those. So focus on that as a senario. What if you had a replay of events in New Orleans for example?

All u need is a 22lr rifle and a 40 s&w pistol and you will survive the Russian terrorists-army. But u have to hide to survive till the fighting stops. If I was 1 of the Russians id go see where the gun shots were coming from. So hunting with guns is out of the question. knives on the other hand are a differant story u can hunt with them soundlessly
