What to do with this mezuzah?

My mom and dad found a mezuzah at a garage sale. They thought it was something religious so they gave it to me. I am not Jewish and I'm a catholic. The instructions in it said to place a scroll inside the mezuzah which I do not have. Would it be offensive or sacrilegious to the Jews if I put something else religious but catholic inside of it? And I I keep the mezuzah?

That would be insulting to Jews. Since a mezuzah is of no significance to you, why don't you gift it to someone Jewish or drop it off at a synagogue to be handle properly.

It's just a case. . The scroll inside, a specially written parchment of Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21 is the sacred part. Put on the doorposts inside a case with a blessing, it protects and sanctifies the living spaces of Israel.

If you'd like to know more about Mezuzot here is an article written by a sofer, a writer of Mezuzah scrolls, who is often on Yahoo Answers: http://mezuzahstore.com/pages/about-mezuzahs.

My feeling is if you are drawn to the case you should learn about it. If someone's intent was to desecrate a sacred object, then it won't work because -- it's just a case. If, heaven forbid, someone did it on purpose to desecrate, then the only thing really damaged would be that soul which would be hidden by darkness away from Gd.
