Yes, it is.

The FBI rates Memphis, TN, as the most dangerous city in the US.

There are parts of L.A. that are dangerous because of gangs, drugs, gang on gang violence, homeless, etc. Generally people known which areas those are and stay clear of them. The dangerous areas of L.A. are: downtown, the south, central, south-central and east sections of the city.

Tourists visiting L.A. rarely need to go into the areas of the city where violence might occur. There are few, if any, tourist attractions and no nice hotels/motels or restaurants.

Tourists have good reasons to go to the downtown area, there are interesting sites, good restaurants and delis, shopping and a few very expenisve, upscale hotels. There is L.A. Live and the Staples Center in downtown too. The vast majority of people who go down there never have a more negative experience than some panhandler asking for money. (Ignore them and keep walking.)

Just about the only reason anyone has to go into the dangerous, gang areas is the Watts Towers.

For millions of people, both residents and tourists, L.A. is a perfectly safe city. Of course a person has to observe the rules of common sense in any area.

As safe as all other major USA cities I'm guessing. It really depends on the area you're in. If you think it's unsafe because of media, don't, media go for bad stories as its gets people's attention more, so you may only hear bad things about Los Angeles making it sound unsafe, but it probably is a lot safer than the media portrays it as. Certain places there, areas and districts could probably be considered unsafe, but then that's the same for all big cities around the world. :3

It depends on where in LA you are referring to, when you will be there and what you will be doing.

I think nothing of walking the streets alone at night where I live, but I wouldn’t in other areas.

In general it is safe and like anywhere else as long as you don’t do anything stupid you should be fine.
