How is basing your beliefs on a text book from school any different than basing them on the Bible?

What is in the text book and what is in the Bible were both done by someone other than you. If you are an atheist for many, many things you are simply taking what is said in a book (text book) as your proof instead of doing the research yourselves.

Update:

Now I am not trying to say that the text books are false.

Update 2:

So far everyone has given an answer that would support the idea that text books are less accurate than the Bible.

Update 3:

@AEF You mean like the finding of the 2 cities which very probably inspired the story of Sodom and Gomorrah?

Update 4:

@AEF Or the fact that the Isrealites spent time in Egypt? Or all the Christian symbols found in digs of the Roman Empire that are dated to the first century? Yeah, there has been NOTHING in the Bible that Archeology has found.

Update 5:

@theo That is basically no different than believing what all the Books in the Bible say which were written by different people. You are still basing your beliefs on what someone has TOLD you, not proof that you have found with your own eyes.

Update 6:

I'm not trying to debunk text books, I'm just asking why it is seen to be such a drastic difference whether you take your beliefs from one book or the other for some people.

Update 7:

@IPU That has NOTHING to do with my question.

Because the Bible has remain unchanged longer.

The Iliad has remain unchanged even longer, though, so I'm going to go with that.

EDIT: The Bible is not a historically valid document. In fact, much of the evidence says otherwise. Unfortunately, you still hear the same old misled individuals claims of 'archaeological evidence'.

Edit2: Sure. Just like finding evidence of real places that are featured in the Iliad or other Greek mythology constitutes proof of that.

Edit3: I suggest you do more research into archaeology of the Hebrew Bible. While you're at it, do more research into the archaeology of the Quran, the Torah, the Iliad and Odyssey and ALL other holy books. You'd be surprised how much archaeology 'evidence' is present for all of these stories. Apparently, evidence that Christians existed in the 1st century=Bible is valid? What a pathetic fallacy. You don't say Spiderman is true because the city it was based in is true. Harry Potter doesn't suddenly become historically valid because it was based in London.

Keep on with your question begging, though, it's quite amusing.

I think you'll also find that these 'true stories' the Bible are based off are extremely exaggerated, if not outright lies in the Bible version.

I do not rather suppose in any of the ones claims. The man wrote it in a seventeenth century sort english and the fellow lived within the nineteenth century. Makes no feel! A god does not want a human to translate some thing and to jot down it down. He could make his possess ebook (or DVD or VHS). Now, that makes extra feel! Also, you do recognize that the church modifies the BoM as soon as in a at the same time? How many revisions has it long past by way of? There isn't any reformed egyptian. Archeology does not help Joe Smith. No golden plates have ever been located and by no means will probably be. ~~~~atheist, serving the atheist time table

This all comes down to requiring a reasonable amount of validation for information. We can be completely gullible and believe everything claimed by everyone or we can go completely post-structuralist and claim that nothing can ever be proven because language and perception is eternally flawed.

Neither of these are helpful so the logical thing to do is set up a system where a high level of corroborating evidence and in the case of science, testing of hypotheses and peer review is required before something is accepted. This way we can feel reasonably confident that if something is taught to our children, it has first been presented to a worldful of scientists many of whom will repeat it, expand it, try to disprove it, change it etc and has withstood these tests. if it is history, there is a different system of verification and for other subjects too. The same is true of religious scriptures like the bible. We find that the bible is one of many books all taken as truth by different peoples at different times with nothing to support it and therefore it is taught to children as faith - requiring belief, whilst science and history and mathematics and geography etc are presented with the evidence for them.

human life, since eternity has always been ''opinion based'' because we were and till to this date are social animals. to make an opinion, we see, hear, touch, smell and taste. the most vivid and powerful sense ''the vision'' required a documentry proof to make an opinion for the human mind, so came the books, then newspapers then electronic media.

now opinions were and even to this date are primarily of two kinds ie self opinion, social opinion

all religious scriptures gave self as well as social opinions. these became more profound in later ages due the illetracy in the past times and the corresponding legacy and reverence associated to them over centuries.

for a truly enlightened and an educated man, any textbook may prove better than the Holy Bible

from a christian believers point of view, its far worse to be indoctrinated from a text book that deletes or omits any mention of God, not that God is evil, its that text books in public schools actually brainwash an entire generation that might take 40 years to repent of.

when comparing the old chinese indoctrination with currect text books, we see an emerging generation that are more atheist than not, and will be more inclined to follow Germany and hitlers view that some people deserve to die, namely the christian community.

So if I read, "Quantum Theory: Concepts and Methods by Asher Peres", I will have to reiterate all of the experimental proof in it rather than relying on the belief that the thousands of well qualified scientists who have contributed to this field of knowledge actually are not lying and know what they are doing.

The reason that textbooks change is that as science discovers new things, they must be constantly updated to keep up with the new information. The reason that the bible hasn't changed is that it's a work of FICTION.

Text books constantly change, but God's word, the Holy Bible, never changes.

  • Well, for one textbooks get old fairly quickly. The Bible remains unchanged.
