how to keep myself occupied in someone else's home?

In a few weeks i will be travelling to see my boyfriend who is currently working in another state and staying with his parents while he does so. Some days i stay he will be at work during the day and i will obviously be at home with his mother who tends to do little other than watch dvds and surf the internet all day. She is very sensitive and lonely and will feel it rude if i stayed in another room all day. So my only option i feel is to stay in the lounge room with her while she watches her dvds.

My Question is what can i do to keep myself entertained, ive considered reading books but i feel she will prefer me to 'watch' her dvds with her. Ive considered knitting and cross-stitch but i was wondering if there is anything else i could do?

Go out and explore the area. If his mother is so sensitive, then ask her to show you around or to accompany you on shopping trips or to art galleries. You will be enjoying the experience instead of resenting her, and she may come out of her rut a bit too, and allow you to have a really good relationship.

DEFINITELY don't sit and watch dvds all day long! If you start that way with her, then she will expect that every time you visit, and you will dread going to see her. The fact that she has nothing to do, doesn't mean you should come down to her level.

Go on the internet and learn all you can about the city you will be going to. Make some plans for the days you will be on your own. Invite the mom to accompany you on your outings. Do not be put off if she declines in favor of her DVDs. Plan to have yourself a long, early walk in the area every morning of your stay that you will be on your own. Exercise is the best cure for boredom! The things you mentioned, like cross stitch, are great for filling in those empty moments between activities and show you are self motivated. You don't have to be entertained. You know how to have a good time. It might be fun to share cooking chores with the mom and both of you get to know each other while you stir up great food. Be sure to volunteer to help with things like table setting, clean-up, and such. Treat this woman as though she is a potential friend. You might actually like each other!

Ask her if she would like to talk a bit. You should get to know his mother. After talking , tell her to relax and you will make her some soup. Specifically put this in the soup:

    1 container of chicken broth.

    2 cups of coconut milk

    1/2 teaspoon of powdered milk

    10 potato slices.

    1/2 cup of water

    4 cups of flour

    1 box of Rice

    Plenty of chopped of vegetables

    Crushed potato chips

    1 cup of chocolate syrup

    1 cup of red wine

    1/2 teaspoon of ragu

3 cups of fruit juices combined

    2 eggs

    3 cups of liquid margarine.

Boil the ingredients until nice and soupy. Once nice and soupy, proceed to getting her some yummy crackers and serve with her favorite TV show! She will love it!

    Go for walks.

    Go sight seeing.

Visit a museum or local attractions.

Plant a small flower bed. Or pot some plants for her front stoop.

Rent bicycles and go for a bike ride.

If there is water near by, go fishing or perhaps rent or borrow a canoe.

Spend a day at the mall or go shopping.

    Cook or bake something.
