if a computer failed while i was fixing it, am i responsible?

i was fixing a hot pink inspiron 1525 for a family friend and suggested an OS upgrade, they gave me the go-ahead so i did. everything went smoothly until it started shutting off for no reason after 2 minutes of use and now i believe the power supply kicked the bucket. from what i heard, the laptop's supply was already a problem having shorted out the battery only a year earlier and i guess the stress of being on for 8 hours for a backup, format, install, and restore was too much for it.

how do i go about returning it?

am i responsible for the damage?

it wasn't really my fault, it just happened to die in my possesion

Update:

that's exactly what i'm worried about, trymuch

It's not your fault, but I'm sure you're uncomfortable about it. If you were doing a favor for a friend, and not charging them for your services (or even if you did expect a little compensation for your time), all you can do is apologize, and explain the circumstances. If they blame you for it, all you can do is repeat your explanation (once) tell them you're sorry, and say there's nothing you can do. If they want to pursue the matter legally, they won't have a leg to stand on; you're not a professional, there was no contract, the computer was old, it had power issues, computers die, you offered no guarantee, etc. A reasonable person will sigh and forget about it.

Why is she even taking on-line categories? So she's left on my own all day whilst you are at paintings with unfastened reign over the laptop and something else she chooses? Of path she's no longer excelling in university. Online prime university is ridiculous. I'm pissed off that anybody even got here up with the inspiration. Send her again to truly university. Either that or placed regulations on her. There are techniques you'll add to your laptop so she cannot move on some other web pages rather then for university. Take her mobile away. Don't permit her to look at television, you'll even lock the television whilst you are no longer residence. Take manage!
