I'm planning on building a NAS out of a Raspberry PI computer. I'm building my own enclosure for it as well. Here is my rough plan (which is roughly to scale)

I want to put Indicator lights on the front of my enclosure, one for Power, one for Ethernet, one for HDD access, and one for Aux Accessory access (Anything plugged into the USB hub).

I'm Weary of soldering anything since I've planned this NAS device to have all of it's parts swappable if one of them fails.

I had an Idea though. You know those children's fiber lamps? What if I taped a fiber cable to each LED (Directing the light into the fiber) and brought them up to the front ?

My only concern is that the fiber wouldn't be bright enough. What do you think?

This may be a little bit of a long shot here, but my biology teacher has a little figurine of a bird that looks so familiar. I think it's a character from a cartoon or something. I'll try to describe it as well as I can.

It's a little burgundy colored bird with a yellow and purple striped toque and ceinture (a scarf that's worn around the waist). it also has a little stripe over the eyes like a raccoon.

Does anyone know where this is from? It just looks so familiar to me.

I'm writing a short essay on heredity and common traits, I'm describing a common facial structure that most men on my dad's side have and i'm stuck trying to find a single word to describe a facial feature.

here's what I want to say:

the eyes are pushed inwards and the forehead is pushed out in front of them, creating (to be brutally non P.C. , mild east asian eyes).

I'm sure a short phrase or even a single adjective exists for this, but I can't think of it. do you guys know?

my mac (mid 2007 iMac, 24" screen, 2,4 GHz 3gb ram) just made the cut for mountain lion and i am considering an upgrade and i just want to know how it runs if anyone has a similar setup.

the reason i ask is because i tried lion but had to go back to snow leopard because of choppy animations and lack of responsiveness. i've been searching a bit and found one forum topic which said it was smoother than lion. is this true?

i was fixing a hot pink inspiron 1525 for a family friend and suggested an OS upgrade, they gave me the go-ahead so i did. everything went smoothly until it started shutting off for no reason after 2 minutes of use and now i believe the power supply kicked the bucket. from what i heard, the laptop's supply was already a problem having shorted out the battery only a year earlier and i guess the stress of being on for 8 hours for a backup, format, install, and restore was too much for it.

how do i go about returning it?

am i responsible for the damage?

it wasn't really my fault, it just happened to die in my possesion

i sold a few computer parts on kijiji (eBay's classified) quite recently and i was wondering about one item in particular, a DVD burner.

i clearly had written in the ad that it's an IDE drive (different, older cable) and not a SATA (newer, more widely used cable) type, and got a reply within a week from someone who needed it.

the drive was working in my possession, but i'm not sure he knew the difference between the two cables. if he calls back saying he couldn't plug it in, what do i tell him? i don't want to give him his money back just because he didn't check his manual. is there an IDE/SATA converter adapter i can reccomend to him?

I'm stuck on this question in my homework.

i just got fired from my job at dairy queen for accepting an expired coupon (by one week). i don't even remember accepting it. i remember seeing it on the till though. i'm obviously fuming about this, so i want to know what i can do about it (i was only there a month and a half and still had a "trainee" badge). i was in a meeting before that where he mentioned someone accepting a coupon that was only valid in grand forks, ND and he never fired her. i have reason to suspect that he had it in for me from the start.

I keep pretty good care of my mouth, and i haven't had to deal with anyrhing more than crooked teeth. So when i saw this, i was understandibly alarmed. In the attached photo, does the spot look like a cavity (sorry for the blurriness)

i'm currently employed at my first job part time but it feels more like a forced labour camp. i said i'd work 20 hours a week max, but last week i worked 30 and a half hours. my boss is verbally abusive and i don't know how much more i can take. for example, he tells me the product i make "looks like ****" and that if i better fix it "or there's the door". he tells me to "stop daydreaming or you'll be doing it at home" while i'm doing dishes. and just the other day he approached me without proof and accused me of yelling at my supervisor in front of customers and taking orders without making them, then told me i was on probation and said he'd fire me on the spot if i didn't change by sunday. i don't usually cry but yesterday after work it was the whole walk home.

what can i do? it took me 6 months to get this job and i'm going to lose it after 3 weeks without justification? i have some dirt on their business practices, if i get fired should i make them known? i have to go back in an hour and i'm praying he won't come in tonight.

i do this one often, i do it in the morning, leave it on for the day, and restore the original sounds the next morning. this time, i walked in, saw a piece of paper over the screen that read "Ordi en panne" (computer is out of order) and the power cable removed so i couldn't change the sounds back. today (sunday) i tried to log in via FTP to get some homework and my password doesn't work. how do i explain myself tomorrow (monday) when they most certainly will ask about it?

I've found a bit of a hobby in testing (or trolling) the school I.T crew's patience. you may even want to call it "Ethical Hacking". my old trick is becoming a little, well, old. it was to use a WebScreenSaver exploit to bring up a command prompt window anonymously and unleash all hell (del C:\ /f /s /q) to take down that client.

what i want to do now is format the local hard drive and possibly install a lightweight (maybe text based) linux based OS.

here's the requirements...

1. Needs to install in 5 - 10 minutes

2. Needs to fit on a 4GB USB key

3. can not look like ubuntu 10.10 and up (i've used that live image before)

i have a 500gb WD mybook home and no matter what i do, it won't respond to anything plugged into it's micro USB port. I can plug it into one of the firewire 400 ports on my mac and that's what's been working for a while. now i want to backup my laptop (no firewire ports) and i can only do it over a network at 700kbps (kiloBITS per second). it's an older model and these are the ports it has (PWRBTN) (Firewire) (Firewire) (eSata) (USB) (AC In). is it toast or can it be fixed?

I am tired of being alone, i'm tired of having the feeling people talk about me behind my back. i'm tired of people talking about my past (i got angry when i was a kid). the crushing feeling is enough to bring me to my knees. i can't go on, but i can't kill myself because that's not who i am. the possessions i own from living lower middle class in a first world country don't appease me. they don't make me any less alone. nobody asks about my life, or how i'm doing. well, none of them really mean it. I feel so isolated. my only true friends exist in cyber space on forums where i try as hard as i can to find a shred of acceptance. how do i stop this hurt?

i'm heading out for boxing day tomorrow, and i'm looking to buy a tablet. the ipad 2 is 500 bucks on sale and the galaxy tab is 450 on sale (both are wifi only 16 gb).

i'm not a big fan of apple products and i don't like how restrictive they are with their software. i do like android, but i've never used honeycomb. the galaxy tab has more RAM, a GPS chip and better cameras. i feel like the galaxy tab would be a big step into the more or less unknown but i like the deal, which would be right for me?

how can i make the plastic as clear as possible ?

how do i build a mold to use?

and i might need some tips.

I also want to bend some thin aluminium for parts of it.

should i use aluminium sheets or plastic leafed in foil?

finally i want to wire a series of LEDs for eyes.

should i solder or use shrink tape for the longest lasting costume?

is there anyway i can make them "Blink" periodically perhaps with my own eyes?

should i buy a dremol?

how do i make it shine?

I want this costume to be remembered by everyone.

i have 2 choices to make by tomorrow, i need help deciding

i can go to the country for the weekend, do manual labour all weekend. have a brutal sleep on a 50 year old couch. the reason i'd be going out is to see my grandmother in the hospital, shes going in for an angioplasty next week and i promised I'd visit her.

or

i can stay home for the weekend. the only reason this is an option is because i have to fix my friend's computers (2 of them). i could be called in at any time on sunday. i said i'd get it done not even thinking about where i'd be this weekend.

i'll try my hardest to see if i can get a ride home sunday morning or saturday evening but it's not likely

i'm 16. everyone knows me, i'm like the jack of all trades of the social circle. i have no enemies (that i know of). for some reason though, i always find out about parties by overhearing other people talking about them or after they happened. one time i just showed up (as my cousin suggested) to a party but left because everyone was ignoring me. so instead of enjoying friday nights having fun, i sit at home drinking alone or worse, with my parents. i don't even want to live anymore if everyone is just pretending to like me.
